Does depth matter??

Ok I've got my concrete pad scheduled to be poured in two weeks. In the mean time I need to get my power and water ran out there. But I also need to make some of these. They are from Red Caddys thread. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1534

They are meant to be set in the slab and allow you to slide in 2 inch square tubing in them to mount grinders ETC on or just to pull from. I plan on putting one in each door way and on the opposing end of the garage just in case I need to winch a car into a bay. Also plan to put some just off the door ways.

So any way how long/deep do you think the receiver tubing should be for maximum stability? I looks like his are about 6 inches.

I'm not sure I understand how these are set, but they seem shallow / short to me to put horizontal forces on.

those are plenty deep for pulling. you will not have a problem.

as deep as the slab is thick unless you make them longer then you can dig down deeper under them so the tubes you put in them will be that much more beefier. We had a hook buried in the slab makes for good place to hook your chains to. Wasn't a hook but one of those horseshoe shape pins things but it was a thick *** one.

No matter what, you'll have shrinkage cracks radiating out from those. (like any column or penetration) So I'd go full depth. Going deeper will also better distribute the forces on the slab.

More penetration would definitely improve the outcome for all involved. Don't forget to make sure that you have a nice tight fit, don't want to much slop!
