I went through this too. I bought a set of channelocks for slip joints. The slip Joint Plier must have been an American invention LOL

I wish they did so I can have a matching set. I got a couple of vise grip slip joints that are the stepchildren of the bunch. I love them all the same though.

Am I the only one who doesn't really like slip-jount pliers? They always end up being knuckle-busters for me. Maybe I haven't used the right ones or something, who knows.

Actually, I had never seen a pair before moving to the US (from Germany/Switzerland)...

Nope, I hate the damn things. I have a pair in my toolbox at work, not sure I've touched them in over a year.

6" knipex cobras beat slip-joint pliers any day of the week.

No, I don't like them either. The only ones I'll use are the Channllocks that I mentioned above - and even then, I only use them when they are all that will work, or when they are the closest set of pliers to whatever I am working on.

Has anyone seen the pistol grip slip joint pliers that Snap-On used to make? I don't see them in the current catalog but a mechanic friend has some. Love them, need to find some.

Slip joint pliers are an american thing,In Europe and Asia they use the combi plier which is like a lineman with the gas adjust cutout right before the cutter.Try a Snap on 47ACP
for a real good slip joint as Merkava suggests it will dispell ill feelings from using dollar bin junk.Utica,Kraeuter, and Pexto made many styles in the past that are flea market finds but still servicable.Sometimes the angled head of the channelock just doesnt cut it in tight spaces.I have been on job sites where everyones linesman pliers were not wide enough to get around something >I always keep one or ten in the shop.

Slip-joint pliers might be any American tool but J.P. Danielson, Karl Peterson and Wm. Hjorth moved to America at the turn of the 20th century. All of which where building wrenches out of Jamestown, New York. There might have been a few others but these guys where from Germany and Sweden. Out of these 3 guys came pretty much every modern style pliers type wrench we use today.
