Does partailly insulating have any value?

I have a 30 x 40 garage with spread web storage trusses. I'd estimate that the middle 6ft is covered in OSB as a walking surface. Bottom chord of the trusses is 2x4 16" OC there is R11/13 in the spaces between. I have approximately 160 Sq ft of R 25 left over from another project but won't be anywhere near what I need to finish it. Is it worth even doing? BTW this garage is always heated to 50 deg and I live in a very cold climate.

anything you add will reduce transfer . if you are planning on eventually doing the entire shop then definitely use that up

the little bit of insulating I did to my house in the past two days, has made a huge difference in how often my furnace runs.... every little bit helps./..

And just helping out is what I'm hoping for. The N/G is always set to 50. But wood is used when I'm out there working. I'm hoping that the more heat I save the less time I have to spend processing wood. So just decreasing the surface for heat transfer will make a difference? It won't just increase the transfer in the less insulated areas?

Any idea what the tipping point is in it being cost effective? Most bang for your buck? Thinking about adding and additional R19

The first bit of insulation is the most effective. If you can get R13 or R19 everywhere in your garage it will make a big difference compared to nothing and well worth doing.

Here in North Idaho, where it can dip to -35, and for a house, the sweet spot where most everyone goes is R38 which is 12 inches of blown in. Garages and shops are generally anywhere from R19 to R30. In my area, there is no doubt that having it installed by an insulation company costs less than you can buy the material or even rent the hopper for blown in. Even the insulation outfit that did my home advised against going above R60 because it just doesn't make a difference after that, but if you can afford it, I'd go R25 on the rest of it. At least R19. What are you using to heat the shop?

That's Billy, just one of our beloved English Springers. We had 5 until Billy took our hearts with him when he passed away 2 months ago from lymphoma, at the age of 10, leaving behind his parents and his sister. He was the sweetest little boy and my absolute soul mate. Those Springers are just like cartoon characters, in that they make you laugh. Not to highjack the o.p. thread but here's Billy exactly one year before he passed.... do you have any photos of your boy?
