Ace Hardware stores are all independently owned. It's going to depend on that particular store's owner/management.

I heard that Lowes doesn't really take them, the only way to get a discount is to sign up for their e-mail movers coupon which is only 10% off

I've used Harbor Freight coupons at Home Depot a few times but it's a much easier sell when you have the full page original ad. The printout one took a lot of haggling

Have not tried sears. I have used it at lowes with 100% success rate

I'll have to try that trick. Harbor Freight is a hit or miss with me on their sale flyers. There are too many different ones out there in my opinion. I have a Sears across from HF by me with a Lowes down the road so this might just work out.
Am I the only one that thinks this is messed up? These stores sell superior tools than harbor freight. (for the most part) Why would you expect them to be able to offer 20% off of their product? The only way they can do that is to lower their purchase price. Which will ultimately mean lower quality, moving to cheaper production areas or both.
I agree. the sears here won't (not the friendliest of staff) but i have heard of it happening at other sears. it costs nothing to ask!
You're not the only one. I can understand a business price matching. Why a store would entertain the thought of accepting a competitors coupon is beyond me.
The trick many places do is that they accept all competitors coupons, and in fine print at our coupon prices.
Why they do it is competition. As soon as one "real" competitor starts doing it, all of them kind of have to follow along.

because making a couple dollars off and item by someone bringing in someone elses coupon is better than zero dollars from someone spending their money somewhere else. lots of places do it and many advertise they do. i've used hf coupons at lowes a couple times with no issues

Matching a "direct" competitor's coupons makes sense. HF is not a direct competitor of Lowe's/HD/Sears IMO, but for some products they are.
You wouldn't expect Lexus to match the same promos Ford was running, but you might expect GM to. I think it comes down to that really. I am shocked anyone besides stores like Big Lots would honor a HF coupon.
It gets fuzzy when a HF is right down the street from a Lowe's or HD, that is why it is manager discretion. To me, the reasonable thing would be to match it up to a certain dollar amount. But that's compromise, and we're not so good at that in this country.

I never would have even thought about it until (like several other great ideas & deals) I read about it here on GJ.

Isn't something like that for like product only? I.e., "Brand X" model "ABC123"?
I can't imagine why they would need (or be expected to) to match unlike products.
