I just found this hand brace but I can find no maker’s mark or anything on it. i would like some info in order to locate the correct jaws that would have been it and such. It is 12” long and has an 8” sweep. Appears 19th century to me. I’ve never seen one quite like this and it is interesting. Thank you in advance for any help.

That is the very very old "Rose Chuck" Probably Millers Falls, but maybe before MF bought the patent. 1860-70s. Fourth down here: https://oldtoolheaven.com/millers-falls/brace/FeaturedBraces.htm

The only one I've found had the chuck filled with plaster holding a rusty **** bit. Presumably the chuck's insides had failed somewhere along the way on mine too. I replaced the bit with a rose head countersink and left it permanently affixed that way.

Good find.

Wow! I really appreciate the thread to the old tool heaven site. I read it and I do believe my Rose brace may have been before the Millers Falls acquisition. Could have been manufactured by Nims & Pratt in 1867, if I read it correctly. Thank you so much as I had no idea what I had. I bought it yesterday for $5.00 at an antique shop.

I read today that some of the early Rose braces had ”ROSE’S PAT.” stamped on them. I wasn’t sure where to look for it but I took my brace out to the garage and started cleaning it up a bit with Kroil and a Scotch (blue) pad to avoid taking off patina but still removing some of the dirt and grime. Lo and behold, I found the stamp. It was hard to see but I took these pics and circled the spots for everybody. I love this hobby. Learned a lot so far. Thank you everyone for your help in finding info.

We don't seem to have thread for hand braces so I am adding some info to this thread.
I just finished a study on Taylor braces. It's a large PDF file. Enjoy.
