I do utility work and run into a lot of square head hardware. I'm looking 4-8 point impact sockets for a 18v impact driver for 1/4" lag bolts with 5/16" or 3/8" heads.

Not sure if they make an impact ready one piece like that but if nothing else just use an impact hex to socket adapter and use whatever sockets you want on it.

Google "8 point impact socket" and you will find plenty. Good ones are not cheap though!
Then get a quality hex to socket adapter.

Four sided square heads are usually used on vintage (read: old) equipment. All of the DIY books that I've read over the years refer to them as such. It's not that they've become obsolete just less used. A large enough 6pt should suffice for a square head though.

I think the OP is wanting a one piece nut setter. 1/4 hex drive to go in the impact driver...and double square on the business end. A quick search turned up empty.

The suggestion has already been made to use 8 pt sockets, and an adaptor. You might also consider spline sockets, as they could be used for hex as well.

If you're desperate, you could make the 1/4 and 3/8 by using press fit bit sockets in reverse. Use the square drive end as the nutsetter, and press in a power bit backwards to chuck in the impact.

the company I work for supplies a lag bit that fits in a brace a lot of guys just cut off the brace end and put it into a 18v drill. I personally prefer my 12v impact for small stuff so I had the garage at work weld a couple socket and adapters together to make my own.

if your gonna use an impact driver, and will use these alot - id suggest hunting down some 1/4" hex to 1/2" square drive adapters with a pin lock (if you buy those ebay sockets) . this way you can really tug on the them and there is no danger of the socket or adapter falling out of the impact driver, or falling down from heights.

i recently started using my 12v max dewalt impact driver at work, and found a listing with a guy selling 5 apex 1/4" hex to 1/4" square drive adapters with a pin lock for like $10. then i bought a cheap $20 sae , 1/4" deep impact socket set from amazon. so now i can use the 12v max impact driver on bug nuts / grounding hardware and stuff.. i dont see many square heads in that size, and if i do i usually just hammer them in, or use a pry bar to rip them out..

dont know your particular situation, but it might be easier and cheaper to just buy your own hex head lags if you are installing new stuff. this way you can buy regular hex head impact nut drivers.

actually you just gave me a good idea, and im gonna try this myself.. i think 3/8" square head lags hold up some U-guards and misc cable clamps by me..

so here's a dirt cheap, 3/8" square head - 1/4" hex drive socket idea for an impact driver..

3/8" drive - 1/4" socket, AND a (select your length) 1/4" hex drive phillips / flat head bit ( you will have to cut the head off to fit in the socket).. OR if you use a square drive bit ( or small phillips bit ) it will fit inside the socket without having to do anything. insert the bit into the socket backwards, to leave the quick change feature on the bit exposed. then just JB weld the two together..

you can always just go with some cheap craftsman 8 points, and try welding or JB welding some cheap hex to square adapters into them.. probably your best bet to get multiple sizes on the cheap and not have to worry about sockets falling off your adapter.

it will round the lags very easily.

The lags are on u-guards. I may be doing some experimenting with a socket and try pinning it. When I get off call, I'll give it a try.
