I have a 20 amp 220V molded plug with the vertical and horizontal prongs plus the ground. I want to also be able to use a 30 amp plug and have seen one with two horizontal prongs with a ground, but not available in Lowes or loal hdw. today. Now my female plug-in matches the 20 amp version with one horizontal, one vertical, but I've seen one with a + on one leg that should accomodate both the horizontal and vertical plug prong and was rated 30 amp, but that one isn't readily available from local stores either apparently.

The goal is to use either plug on the wall socket, one 20 amp and one 30 amp. For the faint of heart, the wiring is #10 and the breaker 30 amp and the 20 amp load has it's own protection.

What is the NEMA reference name for the plug/receptacles you are looking for?

It sounds like you want a NEMA 6-30R for 30A and a NEMA 6-20R for 20A

I don't think you'll find a single receptacle that accommodates both plugs, as I think the blade dimensions and spacing are different.

!5 and 20 amp 240v are somewhat interchangeable. A 15 amp plug will plug into a 20 amp receptacle. The 15 amp has the two horizontal blades, while the 20 amp plug has a horizontal and a vertical, opposite that of a 120v 20 amp. The 20 amp receptacle however will accept either the two horizontal or the one horz/one vert plug. Going to 30 amp however. the size of the plug changes considerably, and a 20 amp plug will not plug into a 30 amp receptacle. When you cross from 20 to 30 amp in 240v, you cross the interchangeable line.

Not for 20 and 30A. Levitton makes a plug (but NOT a receptacle) that can be switched between 30A and 50A by swapping one blade. The hole in the plug's body is + shaped, to accommodate either blade, but only uses one at a time.

I know of no such receptacles like that for 20 and 30A though. Only 15 and 20A.
