Does this look like a real Record vise?

I've been wanting to buy this Vise but I've read stories about non-original Record/Irwin ones. Currrent owner bought it used, complete history not available.

It does look like legit but I'm no pro. Does that look like the real deal? Thank you!

yes it looks like a Record to me. i can't say I've seen the 5 ton in the cast before or those unusual jaw covers, but the made in England and the record in the circle are normal. does the one you posted have the quick release that some of the Record vises have.

Record vises are more common in Canada and Europe than the US so some of those members that have several might be able to help you more.

The fakes don't have the Record name, and are made in China not England. You should be good to go if the price is right.

Looks fine to me. The copies will likely be of similar design, but I doubt even the Chinese manufacturers would be blaise enough to use the Record name on a copy.

Not been able to find out for definite, but I think the tonnage started appearing on some of their vices when Irwin took over. Can only ever recall No's being used before then.

That's a Record vice. The soft jaws are also original Record brand.

They're quite common. I've seen plenty of them over here for sale.

What you have to remember is that Record, (I'm assuming this is where Irwin took the tonnage rating from and decided to try and use it as a selling point instead), back in the day, literally did test their vices and designs to destruction. That tonnage will be the load/pressure point where some part of the vice goes into destruction mode. It obviously bears no relation to general use other than saying how much abuse a vice can withstand, hence why I've always assumed it was an Irwin thing. Never can recall seeing it on any old style Record, always just the angular design ones.

It looks like the later vices just before it all went east , doesn't look a patch on the earlier models ,
I'd be tempted to pass on it and a find a nice old model 23
