I came across this CL posting that showed what looks like a 20+ year old air compressor that moves 6.3 cfm @ 90psi.

http://hartford.craigslist.org/tls/3016375721.html

The only 120v Sears compressors that comes close to that now are the professional models. Even then they're only running about 5.8 or 5.9 cfm.

What am I missing that makes this old compressor have better specs than a modern $500 Sears professional model? Because this compressor has better specs, does that make the $300 he's asking for it reasonable?

I have the next smaller one to that. Exact same everything, except its 1½ hp and 12 gal tank. No belt guard, they were a option when I bought mine, never did get it. Mine does 6.4 CFM@40psi don't recall the 90 psi number, too lazy to go look right now. Those are real good compressors, but I think $300 is high. I'd lean toward $200 as a fairer price for it, and thats if it is in good working order.

My grandpa used to have one of those until the tank rusted through. I don't ever remember him draining the tank so it was probably due to lack of maintenance. It was a good compressor. I guess my uncle bought it for auto body work and painting cars until he passed away in an accident. From what I understand it was more of an industrial model back then made for painting and other high air demand jobs.

Specs are probably right, it is a twin cylinder pump. It is not worth $300, maybe not even $150. You have to inspect the tanks on them very carefully for DIY rust repairs. When I pointed out that the tank had been repaired with JB weld, I got one for $50. That pump and motor is now on a 60 gallon tank set to shut off at 125 psi. Works pretty dam well for $120 invested.
