Does this Vise look repaired?

I'm looking at vises and am interested in a Reed 106. I'm checking out the one in the pics below but the casting lines or repair lines (on each side) don't seem to match any other pics I can find of other 106s. Does it look right to you? There's that strange squarish patch with what looks like 3 almost plug welds on the left side and there's a horizontal line on each side parallel with the slide.
Is this normal?

The casting lines are normal. However the lack of lettering does look a little odd. I don't recall seeing such "plain" areas on a reed. On the other hand I cannot imagine what would require a repair in that area. Go check it out and take a closer look yourself. Even with the paint you will be able to tell when you are handling it and see it up close.

I'd guess it hasn't been welded but that L.H. side looks a little strange. Maybe the previous owner attached some type of plate or label?? That dimple looks perfectly round like it's been drilled and then filled.

It looks like it sold. Did you buy it? If not there's a good sized American scale in Manassas for $300. I have the same model and it's a good vise.

I did....probably over paid, but I've been looking for a while and am in the middle of building a welding table and needed the vise to complete the design. I talked to the seller for a while. Good guy and he's had it a long time. He assured me there have been no welds on the body...I guess we'll find out when it shows up.

If it works, it works. I'd say it's had a very hard life but I bet it does you fine.

I would strip the paint off it and repaint it. To me it looked like there are some cracks in it and the paint is tooo thick makes me think its hidiing something.

I would too. Just to answer the question, so I wouldn't go years and years without knowing.

I talked to the seller for a while. Good guy and he's had it a long time.

Painting a vise just prior to listing it for sale always raises the question as to what's under there.

It is to be hoped the seller just was trying to get top dollar by spiffing it up for the photo session.

I pulled up the listing on ebay and it has pictures of it before painting and it looks to have had a hard life. What was that patch on the left side? you can see it clearly in the pictures. I would also strip it and give it a close look over especially where it meets the base as seen in picture #8.

I wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole.

At least the seller was honest in describing his repairs.

i hope the vice turns out to meet your needs. if the piece doesn't pan out to your expectations, the seller does have a posted 14 day return policy that appears to be buyer friendly other than shipping costs incurred.

Here is my 106 that maybe you can compare to once you get yours. These guys are big and heavy. The jaws are casted in place and very hard. Note the nut, mine has a chip busted out but original. Good luck.

A homemade nut and he welding/spliced on an Acme redi-rod to repair the screw??

I wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole.

The old nut was cast...I think the repair is stronger than what was there originally...

Those are original Nick, very hard jaws. I bet in the low 60 Rockwell range. I have done nothing to that vise yet. Can not wait to get to it. They used a large cutter to cut the serrations some where around 12" diameter.
