Good top quality grinders and wheels don't vibrate.
My old craftsman block grinders are smooth.
I occasionally use a new JET and what a POS! Slow to get up to speed and vibrates like crazy.
Glad it's not mine.

I do appreciate what that guy did.... but I don't have the time.

Have a couple of Rockwell 7" grinders, sweet running machines, and some Baldor models including one badged as a JC Penney, all of them are far superior to the ChiCom & other Asian sourced garbage sold today. Those cheap models need some sort of balancing.

I don't have the time for that but that's an awesome writeup!

I've got a Craftsman 6" grinder (few years old) mounted on a shelf on the wall. It vibrates enough that stuff falls off the pegboard if I use it long enough. Need to find something good to replace that.

Probably not the grinder, but the wheels. Start by running with no wheels as suggested above. Mark the wheels and install one at a time moving them about a quarter turn each try, until you find the smoothest running spot. Then add the next, turning as needed.

It took all of ten minutes to fine tune my Baldor, from a thumping piece of junk to a smoothly running wonder. This one.

I bought this kit http://oneway.ca/products-category/sharpening-grinding-jigs/Balancing Systems for my grinding wheel and worked flawlessly, but I couldn't use it for my wire wheel because of the mounting size on the wheel so I got this wheel https://www.forneyind.com/store/det...sh_industrial_pro_8_x_012_wire_with_12_arbor/ and problem solved, my grinder is extremely smooth and silent. That guy did some very nice work though and I'm sure his set up will work on every wheel he has from now on.

On my cheap Dewalt grinder from HD, I've found the really cheap stamped flange washers have a lot to do with side to side wheel wobble. I need to get some machined washers or adapt table saw blade balancers to it then do the teardrop washers for my grinding wheels.

However, balance issues don't matter much when running two wire wheels and a flap wheel!

Nobody dresses wheels anymore??

Beat me to it. I found that after purchasing a high quality wheel dresser and using it...my ****-tastic bench grinder was MUCH smoother. I have something like this:https://www.amazon.com/Forney-72390-Dresser-Grinding-Wheels/dp/B003X418BK/ref=pd_sim_469_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=2TSV8TQYGYEEH3BKYF7X

To the OP--I wonder if you removed the light grease from the ball bearing setup and applied a light machine oil. Because that concept has been around for ages and even used in balancing wheel/tire systems.

metalmagpie,

Didn't mean to disrespect you by saying it's been around for ages. Just meant to convey that I was stumped why it didn't work, hence the suggestion to remove the grease.

Good adaptation to your bench grinder, and BTW...I just got my email from homemadetools today and saw your's at the top of the list!!---that's why I came here to see if you'd updated anything. Glad to hear it works fine with no grease and no oil!!!

The ring with course inside has been utilized on vehicles wheels for more than 60 years. Decent to see an adjustment. Somebody should make and offer these.

I think this is the company I read about quite a few years ago:
