today i saw MAC Guy comes into our shop.

i just told him "hi"

then, my co-worker comes to me says, "hey, can you warranty this socket for me?" (Mac chrome socket, crack three spots)

So, i said "sure"

i walked to the MAC guy and told him to warranty it.

then he looked the socket and told me "i cant warranty this socket, because you used impact gun on it. manufacture will not warranty this kind of wear".

so i said okay and walked away.

I see many people use chrome socket on impact guns. even they have impact sockets.

what do you guys think??

Why didnt your co-worker try and warranty it? Im guessing he knew why it had 3 cracks. I realize why chrome sockets are used as impacts sometimes size restraints etc but you cant really expect the dealer to warranty mis-used tools. Did you tell him to warranty it? or ask? Im not sure why i posting im 0-2 in getting truck brand item warranted even when the damage is from normal use. Its not because i dont spend money on there tools its just not with them personally account he wont make himself available to me.

Simple answer, traditionally if you owe money, or work at one of the stops on the regular route you can do any damned thing you want to your truck brand tools and abuse the **** out of them, you name it, and they will take care of you. Heck, you could likely cheater a ratchet till it broke right in front of them and they would probably still take care of you!

I really do not suggest anyone not meeting the strict definition I gave above try that because you will be SOL! If you are just a guy with tons of Snap-on you bought 15 years ago working out of your garage, and have moved three times since you bought those tools you can get some decent warranty service at times, you can also get real crappy service by just being this one guy, and they certainly will deny anything questionable of you, wheras the guy with a tab, or on a route can almost cut the stuff in half with a torch and still get it replaced! :wtf:

This is why I like craftsman tools, they will replace abused tools no questions asked. I recently warrantied two punches at sears and the girl didn't even look at them, took less than a minute to warranty.

No, they all won't. Many stores won't, no different than the hit or miss with truck brands.

I'm still wondering why the co-worker didn't step on the truck himself.

Because he knew better. It was abused, the MAC guy saw it, tough. Now, I fully realize sometimes that impact socket just doesn't fit, and you do what you need to do. However, one also has to be ready to accept the consequences of using the wrong tool when it happens, also.

He might of owed the Mac guy some money.

My snap on dealer told me this story.

He comes to a shop to collect money and the guy tells him he has no money (third week) so that same guy gives a co worker something to warranty and guess what the snap on guy tells them, no warranty...

I've had that happen a lot over the years. Sometimes it is a sign a dealer is going under. When the warranty exchanges get tighter you can figure his finances are getting worse.

I've never been denied a warranty on anything, from the Snap-On truck, The Mac Truck, The Matco Truck, or the SK Truck. My Snap-On guy even warranties something if it just looks ugly from use. Every time he comes by he asks if there's anything anyone needs warrantied and that's his first question when he meets new people, he's a really cool guy. In the past though I have seen some guys that are just plain jerks or something of the sort so I agree with whoever up there said it's hit and miss depending on who you get just like in stores.

Uncle buck pretty much covered it all in one post. If you work at one of his stops. You will get great service. If you are a DIY guy who buys a tool once a month or w/e you will get bad service. Mechanics are the guys who put the tool guy's kids through college.

I agree with Uncle Buck in principal.

I also agree that it was probably abuse in a "technical" sense. My problem is that when I was buying lots of tools, every dealer we had knew of, and basically approved the use chrome sockets on impacts. Impact sockets simply would not fit in tight spots.

Just seems you cant have it both ways, but I certainly see where the dealer is under the gun when the company itself starts getting picky on credit. Its a tough situation.

I hardly buy any tools anymore from the truck guys, but I must be honest in that I do get excellent service in about all aspects, warranty included.

my SO guy replaces anything. I definitely didnt spend big money like diesel mechanics or anything (was at a stereo shop), but I think a good bit of the discretion comes down to how you treat your dealer, not even nec. how much money you spend.

I hadnt spent any money with him since last november..met up with him today and got 4 screwdriver shanks swapped with no issue..bought a 5th because I needed it.

My Cornwell dealer would replace anything I give him, but I spend a fortune with him, soo.........................Dealers won't replace your tools if you are a PITA, or a habitual tool abuser! Bet your buddy already tried to warranty the socket, and the dealer recognized it.

I've discussed this with my driver and he told me that if a mechanic brings a swap meet item very occasionally, he'll warranty it. He'll do it once for a walk on too. If that's all the guy (whoever it is), wants to do is warranty beater tools that he's picked up a the flea market, then no.

I've had two sockets that I told the guy "hey man, these have been abused by one of the guys in our shop -- no hard feelings if you don't warranty them." But since they were bought from him (by me), he was cool with it.

When I was with MAC this was a huge issue. They started denying dealer claims or your DM would call and yell at you. They would suggest things like: Deny the warranty on the chrome socket unless the customer agrees to purchase the correct tools.

The president in place when I worked there had all kinds of good ideas about new and interesting ways for me to get my *** kicked.

I never deny a warranty claim, even if it means i have to stand the cost myself. A happy customer is what matters to me.

Joe Blow off the street who you have never seen before brings you a wrench that has been cut in half and wants a warranty replacement and you will give him a new one?

That's is what I was thinking, Like one of the guys who stopped at our shop when he seen the truck. He had a few of the old green handled screw drivers and wanted new blades put in them, He had obviously been using them with a hammer and that is why the blades were broke. He was told that a #2 Phillips was not a drift punch and he left all made ranting about a "Life time warranty my @ss"

Would any dealer here have done the warranty on that mans stuff?

Probably, my Snap-on man will let you use his vise to break off a worn screwdriver tip so he can warranty it. You should have told him that you would do the warranty if he bought some chisels from you. Upsell, man, upsell! :)

I've had dealers break the tips of screwdrivers in their vise themselves to show me what was warranty.Worn out isn't warranty so here crack the tip off like this and then it's warranty.

My SO dealer takes good care of me. I broke off my biggest flat blade SO screwdriver trying to pry a brake seal out of a tractor. It was a hard plastic handle that had been beat on a few times. I told my dealer I had to pry a tensioner out of the way because my hand was stuck, and that i figured a screwdriver wasa lot cheaper than the alternative. he didn't care. JHe also warrantied an old orange handled dead blow hammer that was missing 97% of the plastic & the center rod in the handle was bent, and I told him it wasn't mine.

he has also warrantied my #1& #2 phillips that were just work out.

Ona side note, I picked up standard & metric wrench sets & a set of deep sockets off cragslist for 1/2 the cost of new, and they were virtually unused. Dealer saw them & asked where they came from. Itold him where & why & he said he didn't blame me,and that if he would've seen the add he would have bought them to resell for profit as used.

Joe Blow off the street is a different matter entirely.
I was merely trying to illustrate that keeping a customer happy is important to me. If someone makes a purchase from me, and if it breaks and i don't honour the warranty, then next time he won't buy from me!
