Hi everyone. I thought I'd share my recent garage build with you all. My real name is Brian Anderson and I live in West Michigan. I'll show you the progress on the garage, thoughts of why I built it the way it is and enjoy your feedback. I'll also be asking questions on finishing it off and get some great ideas from you all as I finish it off this year. Looks like I have to link photos into the forum so I'll get them all on photobucket so I can start sharing.

Local zoning limits me to what I can build. It can only be 600sq ft and the mean height can only be 14.5' . . . . I wish it could be another 12' wider but these are my limits of the township I moved into.
So here is a view of my property, a plan I found on-line for a 24x25 garage with 10' inside ceiling. I sent this off to a local contractor to quote as there is no way I could get the building up myself, thought was to get this up and I'd finish it off on the inside myself.

Yellow is future vinyl fence, green circles are existing shrubs, green line is a chain link fence, Black is our home, red is the new garage and purple is new 18' wide cement driveway

The contractor draws up a plan and we submitted it for approval and no issues with the township. No issues for a new driveway with the county neither. Here is the plan and also some before images.

Next they plowed through the existing chain link fence line and put down some dirt to level the area out. Also included a side by side before after

Rock Solid floor paint was on clearance at the local Lowe's for $40....yes that's really cheap. Had to buy a double and a single so I had enough for 600sq ft.

I decided to buy some nice cabinets, they arrived last week. They will go along the front of the garage and wrap along the left side a little bit. Front right corner of the garage will be the 80 gallon air compressor and tig welder.

WOW that went up fast! I like the matching corner of the house idea. That is going to be a very nice garage/shop set up, great storage loft.

That turned out right nice. Congrats on the new dog house. But I got to ask one question. Why did you install an entrance door on a side you have no vision of, especially since you have another on the house side. Aren't you worried about theft?

It was a last minute change. Between the house and the garage will be a privacy fence and we have two boxer dogs. I feared my friends visiting it wouldn't be so great if they entered through the gate to the door if they were outside and in the winter would also be an issue to get into the garage for visitors so we added the door for them. I have a friend I visit and you can't get to the door in the winter without going through the house, it's just invasive to me to walk through his house when he's in the garage if you know what I mean. My town is ranked in the top five in the country for no crime, a very conservative Dutch religious area so I'm not worried about thieves here and it'll have a bar across that door inside anyways so IF someone tries they won't get in. The framing in of the garage and the trusses/shingles went up in 4 days. The whole project has been going on for about 8 weeks now. All that is left for them is final grade and hang the heater, run the natural gas line.
The fence and lawn I'm doing next. Hope to have a new deck by winter. Car hoist will be put in by winter as well.

That makes perfect sense. Guess I'm not much different in that respect either. I prefer anyone coming over to the shop egress a certain way to keep them out of the house and away from the dogs too.......that way they don't get licked to death. :p

OK...
What do you guys suggest for the inside. I was going to just use drywall the walls and ceiling. My contractor said it'll crack and fail due to summer/winter temps. I've never heard this before.
He used plywood and painted it white on his personal garage.....I'm not a fan of how that would look personally, I want this garage really nice looking and reflect light well. Any ideas?

I'm ten minutes east of ya in Barnyard Center. I insulated and drywalled my garage ten years ago. Not a single issue with cracking. I used regular 5/8" drywall from Menards, fiberglass tape at the seams, and topped it with lightweight joint compound (blue lid stuff at Menards).

fwiw - my late Uncle Ed lived about five houses down from you on the south side of Beechwood.

Full disclosure: mine is attached, but only along one wall for approx 12 feet.
It gets so cold out there in the winters that I've had Pepsi explode inside of my garage fridge.

Really nice build. I am gonna check on the floor covering at my Lowe's today and see if the clearance is nation-wide. I look forward to seeing your toolboxes and cabinets in there.

What are your plans for lighting?
