Anyone have one of these DOHC lock tools:

http://www.lislecorp.com/tool_detail.cfm?detail=603

I need 2 for a quad cam Pontiac i am working on and really don't want to shell out $100 for two of them. Was wondering if anyone out there has one and could give me dimensions between the pins, and the length of the adjustment arm so I can fab my own?

Thanks,
Bill

I dont know about quad cam motors, but one thing you can do is use a paint pent to make marks on all of the gears. When you put the belt on, you set up two of them together, and use those black spring clips meant for holding big stacks of paper to hold the belt on, or some sort of similar clip. If they are both locked on, pull the belt around and repeat it on the other side.

Maybe this helps, maybe not...

i am always put marker on timing chains on ford engine because ford said the timing chains should had copper marked but most time i tried to find it and nothing showed so i had to put white marker on it... i would buy dohc camshaft lock tool for famous 2.0 and 2.4L engines but big problems is i dont work on it often as i only do once a month even nothing... But my dealership had special tool for timing system so i prefer to use dealership's special tools so i can saving my money in my pocket unless i doing it so much then i would had own one for myself but i don't...

Great tool ... you should support Lisle ... anyway, between the pins is 3.25" and lowest ajustment is 2.2" compressed all the way down ...

I have yet to really need one of those lock tools. It is theoretically possible to bend valves if you don't use them on disassembly with some engine designs, but I've been lucky so far. Set the engine to TDC at cylinder #1, and have at it. I make timing marks with a white paint pen as needed. This is very useful for DOHC engines where there is only one camshaft belt/chain sprocket, and the adjoining camshaft is gear driven from the drive cam. Invariably you have to remove the camshafts before you can unbolt the cylinder head, which makes this useful on reassembly.

I believe it was a 2.2L Toyota engine that was designed in that manner that I worked on last, if I recall correctly.

I've never found the need for the cam locking tools, it might take a few minutes but I always manage to wrestle the belt around the 4 cams, one crank 2 idlers and one tensioner. If I find a cam like to keep moving I use a springs clamp to hold the belt on the cam. There is a lot of regurgitated mis information on the internet about cams moving and bending valves, I have yet to see an engine where this is possible, when the cam snaps it closes valves it's not springing them open. I do however know the BMW V*'s require special bmw tools because fo their crazy valve timing bs, but if you own a bmw v8 just push it in a river and cut your losses.
