I am redoing the back wall of my garage. Right now its not really optimal as far as setup goes since Im just using what was there when i moved in.

*more questions in post #3* December 2013.

Looking for some others ideas on heights.

1. Height of work top to work on (Using butcher block with Maple that I had milled in 2001).

2. Height of the bottom of the upper wall mount cab above the work top.

I am hoping to make a scaled down version of something similar to what I saw in "TIG"'s garage thread with stepped depth overhead cabs.

Unless your short...I would do at least 36" for height.

All of my cabinets are attached to the wall....about 8" above the floor....makes cleaning a lot easier.

You want at least 16" between the counter top and the bottom of the wall cabinet.

24" is somewhat of a standard depth....but I think 28-30" is better.

Go into your kitchen.....it 'should be' 36" high with a 24" depth....if that is comfortable for you...go that way.....but if your one of those who likes to sit on a stool at the bench....38-40" high.

I made my own cabinets.....click on the Garage Build link in my signature for info.

Going to ask some more questions in this thread beyond what I asked in the OP.

I have a few napkin type drafts of what I think would work well in my space and I am looking for a bit of help with some feedback on my design.

Cabinet config #1.
Full wide bench, full wide overhead storage with previsions for amplifier.

Cabinet config #2.
Full wide bench top with roll out cabinet, full height cabinet on right, small overhead cabinet with previsions for amplifier bringing the top to 2/3 wide.

The space I am building this in is about 100-110" wide and I haven't actually put any dimensions on my drafts to see if they will fit or not but I think at a conceptual level they seem quite feasible. The bench isn't so much a work bench as much as for putting tools as I am working on something, keys, phone, laptop, etc. I have a separate workbench for heavy things.

Thanks for the feedback,
Matt

Of the two choices I prefer #2.
In #1 the TV will be too low for anyone not seated directly in front of the bench. It will also be obstructed by anything sitting on the bench and too easy to damage from errant parts/tools.

If the TV is JUST for you while working at the bench then I suggest an under cabinet flip down unit instead of a wall mounted panel.

I like the overall layout of #1, but the TV mounted at work bench height wouldn't work for me. Not sure what your bench sees, but I'm constantly pounding and cutting things, working on grimy parts, spraying brake cleaner, etc, that TV wouldn't last a week located there.

Frankly I would not bother to make lower cabinets. I would buy 2 of the HF toolboxes and put them together as a bench. You can also makemit where the bench is attached to the walls and the toolboxes roll out to go to the work you are doing.
Also if you want a place to sit you can leave a space beteen the toolboxes

Thanks for the idea, Rsanter... but I need bulk storage more than small part storage so the full doors/ locker are a requirement. I have a 42" box that holds my small tools.

I drew a better scaled copy of my plan #2 with some real world dimensions and it seems like it should work very well with space for up to a 32" TV in that location.

The location of the TV is preferable in #2 as well because then I can see it at the other side of the garage as mentioned in here... But it will mostly be for computer use...be it youtube or whatever someone else that is in the garage with me is doing.
