My wife's birthday was Wed. May first, so I made her a few turned seam rippers as presents....

I use the mini lathe I picked up here:

I made three - 1 out of Cherry - 1 out of Padauk - and 1 out of Acrylic.
It was the first time I'd turned Acrylic and it was fun...It polished up pretty good (for a rookie 😁)

Small seam ripper out of Padauk

Double ended out of Acrylic - small seam ripper on one end and a stiletto on the other end

All three seam rippers...

Turning the Cherry & Padauk ones were easy....

Turning the Acrylic made a huge mess but was fun!!!
(and a learning experience)

I clicked on this thread thinking "metal"
so was disappointed.
But looking at your work, which is very fine, I'm now glad I did.
Kudos to you!
Sorry bout that, Chief :lol_hitti
Yes, I would like to get a metal lathe and try my hand at that medium. (recon I can find one at a thrift store??)
Is there a long cap that can go on either end of the double seam ripper?
The rippers attachments are double ended with just a post on the other end....there is a brass tube glued in the center of the wood/acrylic blank, so you can flip the attachments around when not in use....

Although you can flip them around for storage, my wife said that she would always leave them out ready for use.

Very nice work. The acrylic is an interesting medium to work with. Love the way it turned out with the veining in it.

Thanks,

Yeah, My wife and I stopped by the new Rockler store in town and I told her to pick out a fancy blank she'd like for one of her seam rippers....She liked this one!

Getting ready to bore an 8mm hole down the center....

Done!

Checking the fit of the brass tube before I epoxy it in....

This was my first time turning Acrylic so I didn't know how this would turn out but, it did o.k.
I sanded it all the way thru 12,000 micro mesh sandpaper but I didn't have any plastic polish, so I used Flitz metal polish....

But, it worked like a charm!!

I don't think I've turned acrylic before. Is there any issue with chipping? Only plastics I work with are nylon, delrin and occasional pvc.

This acrylic blank probably because it was square and I was feeding the cutter in to fast started out with pretty big, clunky chips (due to my inexperience) but once I backed out on the cutter and got the blank close to round it settled down and turned smoothly.
Also a sharp tool is needed for best results....I use the round carbide cutter and a HSS gouge (Actually, truth be told I tried out every tool I had )fb23.jpg

Someone will be along shortly to tell you that a Makita 9 inch grinder would have been better.
