So I’ve been able to get some pictures and bump some blocks off the driveway and have a good sort out this weekend.

Had a bit of a bonfire with the bushes that got ripped out and some more scrap wood from the house extension and the off cut of laminate flooring I laid indoors.

This is the last of it burning down - had about 8-10 foot flames at the fiercest burn. But I didn’t have my phone in my pocket at the time! I think this is the last bonfire I will have now the garage is up. The back of the garage is a lot nearer to my fire site than I feel happy with. Especially as it is going to have white render, I don’t really want soot or scorch marks!

If I missed it, excuse the repeat question. So what are your plans for the garage? One car and a shop area? Two car parking?

EDIT: Duh, I needed to read the title. So watcha gonna do in the workshop?

Well I am a car guy first and foremost. I was on the spanner’s (aka a mechanic) for a good few years. But I am also too cheap to pay someone else to make / fix if I can do it myself! So the work shop will have to be a space where I can do cars, a bit of metal work and a bit of basic wood butchering!

The very back of the space is gonna be partitioned off as my “gym”. I have a running machine and weights that need a home, then I might be able to make use of them.

The first job is lined up as soon as I get a roof on the garage.

I bought the wife another “runabout” as the current one is getting too rusty to pass another MOT.

She loves her little Mercs so I picked this one up last weekend. 2.1 litre 140bhp and weighs about 1100kg. So it will be quite entertaining once I get the clutch replaced.

Also need to get some time to give my car some love. I haven’t had a chance to was it since I went to ford fair back in August.

As you can probably tell from my car being a Fiesta ST I love little cars with relatively big engines!

So by the end of the week I should be fully roofed. Windows and pedestrian doors fitted early part of next week we hope! Electrics in on Tuesday as well. Unfortunately it looks like a breakdown in communication between us and the builder means that I probably have to fit the main door myself.

Also thought you guys might like a picture of current work in progress in the kitchen. (I know it ain’t a garage.... but it’s kinda part of the same project) 287f1fdad6d4e1eb2a8ddaf75b368edb.jpg

zDomz, the kitchen upgrade is directly linked to the garage. If the former doesn't happen, the latter doesn't happen. Unless you have a completely different relationship from the rest of us.

Nice progress on the garage. Hopefully you can get assistance with the door from someone else. I replaced the three in my garage but never put one up from scratch.

Nice project!

The garage door mounting isn't that difficult, mine were mounted by a 'pro' and the motors got broken very quickly cause of the bad installation :((very bad alignment). So think you're gonna do probably a lot better than the 'pro' who did mine. You can find a lot on youtube or ask some advise here. Just make everything nice and square, use a laser if you have access to one. Most difficult thing to do is mounting the springs but I found a nice video about it on youtube when I mounted my second hand door in my carport.

Good luck!

I finally got to see the weeks progress on Saturday morning.....

A quick trip to buildbase (local builders merchant) who have a small timber mill got me sorted out with the wood for framing the garage door.

But family duties then called and had to head down to London for a surprise 60th birthday party. Work will resume shortly though!

Looks a nice spacious garage hard for us Brits to find. Regarding insulation I found a place that sold inexpensive seconds of Kingspan insulation board online and laid that on one inch battens to create a gap between the Kingspan board and the wall. I then covered the Kingspan board with plasterboard and just papered and painted. I barely ever need to use any heating.

Been a while since the last update.....

So I am still waiting for my builder to come back to finish the last little section of the roof and fit all of the ridge tiles. But as the felt is keeping the rain out better than my metal shed is at the moment I decided to crack on and get the door fitted and move my tools etc in.

Budgetary and time constraints mean at the moment I am going to have to manage with out making it look good inside yet. I also want to get a feel for the space so I can plan things properly for future walls, flooring and electrical work.

Here are some pictures inside. When I see the outside of my garage in daylight with the door on I will get some more! f720dda3fe2fa27733017ba64daf5ad0.jpga5e4a5846e52e21aed433588a6a2438e.jpgaf60913153fa48733edec995740401da.jpg

That was the original plan. But the apple and plum trees had to stay. (In house planning department insisted). Also may not have got permission from the council if I had to remove 8 trees.

Has your wife spent much time picking up fruit off the lawn? Give it a few years and she'll be over having fruit trees ;)

Looks like a good build, what's the first project now you've moved in?

I can count the amount of fruit she has picked up off the lawn with no fingers!!! And I end up picking off the trees as well........

First job to do to the garage is work out a lighting plan then board and insulate the ceiling. But I have to juggle that along with working on the house!

Before you get too carried away, paint the walls, you get a lot more reflected light if they're not just grey block.

Thanks for the advice - I painted previous garages and your right it makes a huge difference. There is no point doing that here cuz I will be insulating and boarding it out. Although that might take a while to get to it.

Ahh that makes sense. What insulation are you planning on using? I wish I had painted mine before I've moved in, it's now got a comedy 'paint around the toolbox' scheme. At least I did the floor thou.
