These ammo boxes with the cool Ordnance logos have moved into the basement.5AEBB3F7-2973-4A4C-B975-91CCB531D81C.jpeg43944D85-A2FB-48CE-A58F-939D5260620A.jpegE33C7866-36D9-4804-B872-64D0C377FDC5.jpegF014B224-B8AA-43BC-BC6F-763353B930BF.jpeg

Always amazed at the sets

I’ve got a couple ammo cans with the ordinance logo I’ve picked up over the years. Anything I can safely treat the surface rust with?

I added several of the oilers to the display today.

That dark coloured pistol type with the wide base and fixed spout on the extreme left of the 2nd photo. I have one looks identical, mine was bought it 30 yrs ago from Snap On truck and had one of their paper stickers on the side of it. Only other marking on mine is 'USA' on the handle, it still works like new. I assume it's made by Plews?. What's the story behind them? I can't find history of Plews on line.. It's the only decent oiler I have on the farm, i bought it after becoming sick of wasting my money on useless rubbish ones with plastic inside workings from the local Agricultural supply dealers !

Thanks. In order to preserve the original finishes, you might just wipe them down with boiled Linseed Oil.

I posted the listing for a Plews oiler from the WW2 Navy NAF catalog upthread. Going back to the days when I was an automotive buyer, I believe that Plews and Tru-Flate were bought out by Edelmann and they are still being sold by them. 19B5730B-830E-4070-8CD9-6FD0F641425E.jpeg

Thanks Don,
I saw your old catalogue post, and the picture of your oilers, and that sparked me off to find out the origin of mine but I couldn't make the link to the modern Edelmann ones!
The breadth of knowledge and kindness of GJ members like yourself never ceases to amaze me, I have found answers to questions I have wondered about for decades. Also found a lot of questions I never knew existed!:D

That inside flap to protect the shanks is nifty and it's even niftier that it's fabric. I don't believe I have ever seen mixed materials (vinyl and fabric, canvas and leatherette, etc) like that before on any pouch or roll-up, for wrenches, nut drivers or whatever. That's a really neat touch by them.

Hey Don,

I like that tool box! My grandfather was a tool maker at Ford Motor and later at Timken Gear and Axle. Along with dozens of taps, assorted drill bits, and lathe cutting bits (not pictured), the items in the photo below comprised most of the tools he had in his box during his career.

Jim,
Thanks for the pictures. I’ll use those as suggestions for the next items to add. Tap and Die holders along with some taps and dies are on my list. A sliding square with accessories and at least one small hammer is now on the list as well.👍I like the vacuum grip pliers!

With inspiration from Jim’s pictures, I started by going through the taps and tap holders. 8611092B-0E0C-4CE5-85C3-8AD01B24EB25.jpeg
I eliminated duplicates and ended up with these in the Gerstner. 8A619A95-F55D-4719-9CCA-2443DC613809.jpeg
Oops, forgot the extractor set. 5B663B10-F981-4FD0-989E-071B287BB09B.jpeg
Next I got some Starrett square pieces out and they ended up in the bottom drawer.8F6C5853-29A4-45C1-AF97-30FC2045710E.jpeg3F592187-6117-4E46-B30A-8B27FF1724C8.jpeg
I got out some hammers, chisels and files.29478AFF-AE57-4FF9-913B-BE118E317D33.jpeg
And added them to a couple of drawers. 055A5D4A-D62B-4CA8-81A0-43E2C0156335.jpegA8A362D8-0AA5-4E7F-BA8C-7DBA930C57F8.jpeg

I wish that there was room in the basement for the wartime jerry cans. I did find this abused Plews oiler hidden in the garage. It still has it‘s original sticker. I added it to the others after draining the oil out of it. 8D2EE67A-3A97-48DC-8269-A90DA9555016.jpegBF22AA54-BDED-4CB4-B8FE-8C1F698E1D2D.jpeg

Shiftless stopped by today with an incredibly generous huge care package for the basement display. Here are some of the cool items. A large, very cool Millers Falls number stamp set in a wooden box and a Craftsman long C midget set box that I won’t be able to resist filling up.
343502FA-3AD6-444C-90CB-843F311F0D0C.jpeg
This Starrett inside micrometer set immediately went into the top of the Gerstner box which will be it’s new home. 1F2E0833-F705-4768-86E0-73D038866192.jpeg27804546-34E5-4EBE-82E8-E04D1C842A78.jpeg
He brought several number drill bit sets including a Morse index that is a close match to my newest number index. The bits will help to fill out some vintage indices.DE590963-FDD9-4263-9F42-318007D90CDB.jpeg
I spent some time this afternoon adding number bits to indices. 90B44AFB-7E36-43BC-A174-3FD43921E7A5.jpeg
I moved the Outlaw inspired display into the basement. 37C6C92E-0453-4426-AF79-C72144955B9D.jpegF4BBFF7C-5690-442D-B4AC-0CA1FD0B3ABB.jpeg
I‘m going to put these drill bit sets into the Gerstner CE813B50-D9CD-43E3-B34C-2BBA5724D32C.jpeg
But first I needed to glue up a drawer that a side came loose on C64D1C6D-9AC6-4AEF-968A-3DD1DB2E3A1B.jpeg
It should be good to go tomorrow.

There is getting to be Thorsen overload in that section. I added correct tools to these small sets and then loaded them up with some extras. Here is the current state of the Thorsen display.

I’ve found a couple of monkey wrenches lately. Now that they are cleaned up I added them to the display. The first one is a true perfect handle made by HD Smith. 5CC4C275-CD34-4EB3-A8F3-01A6ACFC8177.jpeg6E909F4D-6E7F-4503-A6E2-8620508B51E5.jpeg286BE00E-C188-4C39-BFF4-AF7008D7C34B.jpeg
The next one Is a Whitaker. It started out pretty rusty. 8791E5B5-622E-40EE-ADCB-B11733EAB61B.jpeg1011EE7F-1F91-482D-850B-E462E1358675.jpegEF6C84F7-533C-4C80-8608-46E4E22523BB.jpeg243EA539-7C94-4544-BD56-2DF4207060B0.jpeg

Ever since I received the Christmas surprise Navy Kennedy cantilever box from four.cycle, I’ve been having great fun adding tools that I imagine would be appropriate. I finally added the D-I 1/2” drive tools today and decided that if I waited any longer to move it to the basement it would be too heavy to lift.
Here is the box on Christmas morning. 8E6A07B1-02CB-4F3D-8D72-9736903899CF.jpeg

Very nice stuff, I got to start going to the yard sales and estate sales with my cousin, or at the least give him a list of tools I want.

The tool boxes I got from my other cousin have given me a great taste for old tools, working in Construction all my life I have always respected tools but never have I found them so intricate and interesting until I acquired some old tools.

They just don't make em like this anymore....
