Ok, so here is the story. A few weeks ago I helped my father in law change out his ex wifes radiator(another story altogether)...Anyways while looking for some tools I spot the jaws of a vice sticking up on the back corner of his bench parked in the back of his garage with **** piled on it. Fast foward to today, while at his house I make a call on a vice from a craigslist ad, vice is sold. Says he has one. One thing leads to another, and this ends up in my garage. Rock Island no574, only thing Im going to do to it is use it.
As you can tell from the rust line on the bare metal and the dust collected, its sat for awhile

as a GJ member, you cannot "just use it." You need to do something to it first. I would suggest hitting that bare metal with a scoth bright pad and WD40...then USE IT! Great vise!

You ask us to not hate you, but you seem to be trying so hard to be hated. Has anyone ever told you that you are self passive aggressive?:lol_hitti

A word of respectful advice. Do not trip in the garage anywhere near where this will be mounted. Your overwhelmingly good luck will eventually have to be balanced back out to neutral to keep the world on its' axis. If you ever trip near that vise your head will be trying to smack into that huge chunk of metal to do just that, and your head will most likely lose that battle.

Nice find indeed.

I've used vises like that in industry. It's unusual to find one in a garage. That thing will last you forever.

So, the cynic in me has to ask...

Did you really talk to someone on the other end when you called about that vice on CL, or was it just for your FIL's benefit?

(kidding!)

To be honest, that phone call was on a Craigslist ad about a vice, but I wasn't going to pursue it. You hit the nail on the head my friend.. I had no idea that it was a quality vice though.

Telling us to not hate you for a recent acquisition sounds dangerously close to self-sucking.

From what I've read it's 78lbs, and it feels every pound of it!

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do about that...I'm thinking making an inner frame from some 2x2 for the table. I just don't have room for another table in my 2car garage.

Great vise. I searched the web for info about Rock Island Mfg. and did not come up with much. What do you know about them? (Open question for all)
