I just came home from Lowes and had to return a item. When I got in the customer service line the guy in front of me had a hummingbird feeder. He was not that type of person you would expect to have a hummingbird feeder. The cashier said what people do is go through the trash or find a receipt in the parking lot and come in the store and find the item to match the receipt and then bring it to CS for a refund. Just had to share it.

Not familiar with lowes return policy but I know stores like bestbuy and walmart always have someone up front to mark returns so you cant do that.

That would only work if it was a cash receipt, a credit card or a debit card if he isn't the person on the card, "bring-in the person on the card to get the refund."

"Sorry, that's company policy." If the person is "sick at home," OK, bring in a driver's license photo or photocopy matching the account info.

What difference does a scribble or a colored marker line by a renta-cop make in being able to return an item? Someone legitimately leaving the store would get the same scribble. Maybe you mean if they threw-away the receipt in the store? There are plenty of times I haven't gotten something marked by the renta-cop at HD.

I remember when sears used to do cash refunds without a receipt. Maybe that gives some clue as to why they're struggling now....

that's absurd and not worth worrying about. sounds like Lowe's "problem" since, as mentioned earlier, would only work with a cash or gift card purchase.

I find it interesting that there are people scrounging around shopping center parking lots looking to cheat the stores. I agree that it is the stores problem. But at the end of the day it cost all consumers money.

Another common trick....stick a different bar code on an item...like a $5 bar code on a $300 item. They do this when using the self checkout lane.

They don't always get away with it. I know our local police has arrested people for doing just that at Wal-Mart.

Another problem with their receipt is if you leave it in the sunlight or even leaving it inyour truck console for a couple of weeks you can't read them seems the ink just disappears.

Like most thefts and other crimes, they might get away with it a few times, but will get caught. HD has started displaying a picture of the item being scanned at the register in order to make this more difficult.

No they don't.....cuz I've booked a few of them.

In most cases they are doing it for someone else. Guy cops to "Armondo gave me the bar codes and told me what to put them on."

So instead of going to jail for simple theft....he goes for a Felony....

How does that happen? Our self checkout lanes have scales in the bagging area and expects the correct weight item to be put there. Happens to me all the time that it locks the screen and flashes the light screaming "unexpected item in bagging area"

I'm going to deliberately take my $0.37 nut or bolt receipt, crumple it up in an obvious manner, and then cast it high into the air for one of these fellows.

I just want to see his face when he opens it up for 37 cents.

I knew kids in HS that did that back in the '80's...not that easy anymore.

doesn't work in the self check out, the item weights wouldn't match and you'd have to call the clerk, who would see the item doesn't match the scan description...

Also HD and Lowes require you to provide your license now to receive a cash refund.

People also use receipts to get duplicate orders, I heard of a local college student who would buy something like 2 cases of beer, on the way out the walmart door pass the receipt to a friend who was walking in. They would go back in the store, grabbed the same 2 cases of beer, went up front by the customer service desk, then left the store. If questioned they had a receipt from the last 10 minutes for the purchase so unless the cameras were watching, they had no problem leaving the store.

I return stuff to lowes all of the time. They have a separate entrance for returns so not impossible, but a bit harder to pick something off the shelf and return. I have never been asked for an id, and I always used a debit card. They give me the option of cash or put back on the card. I always take cash because they say it could take up to 15 days to see it back in my account.

It 'may' have been LLBean that has recently changed their returns policy. Seems they were getting a lot of stuff back that had obviously been used til it wore out. The customers thought they would only need to buy one pair of boots for their entire life. Seems to me it's a sad commentary on the values of a lot of people now.

The local Home Depot had a problem with people who bought fresh cut live Christmas trees returning them a few days after Christmas for a refund. They ended up posting signs that said something like, "100% Satisfaction Guarantee expires on the date of the Holiday".

It's hard to believe people would actually return a used cut Christmas tree for a refund after they had it in their living room for a week, but apparently they were.

I returned something at Home Depot that I had bought with a credit card, and instead of getting the money put back on the card, I got store credit. I didn't want to put it back on the card because I had gotten a new card with a new number and they were going to put the money onto the old card number, which didn't exist anymore.

At walmalt & HD near me, there is an option to skip bagging for items if the scale doesn't detect any weight. By doing so, you never put the item down to weigh it. So there is a work around.

Its a much bigger problem than you might think. I use to work the tool dept. at Lowes and much of my job was to watch for people who made a living shoplifting. Most of the time it is a real organized effort. One guy would recruit people and show them what to do. We would catch people and they would tell us they had been doing this for a while making 5 fig. The people that hired them make 6 fig.+. They have routes and days they come in and go from one store to another, we not only knew who they were but where they were going next. They would go to all kinds of extremes to distract, so someone can swoop in and out in seconds. Most of the time they would target certain items and just run out the door, LP and employees were told not to apprehend because it was to dangerous. Our best defense was to stay on them and kill them with cust. service. Theft was written off to the toon of 10%. If you were in a54M a year store they would expect to loose 5.4M. Take that and multiply by 1000+ stores and you get a grasp of how serious it is. They have finally wised up and are beefing up security and proscuting more. They found web sites that people could go to and make a shopping list of things they wanted to have stolen. Wonder why prices go up? Its not just the price of manufactuing.

I've been approached several times in the store by someone trying to sell me the store credit they just got for returning something.

I always say no, because I know what's going on, but I'm sure they will find someone to take them up on the offer.

They used to do that a lot around here. The gift card guy is in jail. They have people all the time get a mitre saw and go straight to returns.

LL Bean said it appears people were buying used LLBean at garage sales/thrift sores and returning stuff for new replacements.

At our local Menards, thieves grab expensive merchandise and head straight to customer service and demand a refund. I think all they get is store credit. I don't think the employees want to create a scene.

I saw a couple return dirty yard tools. When asked what's wrong with them "Nothing, we don't need them anymore." Money cheerfully refunded.

I've also heard of people buying gallons of bleach at walmart. Using a drill to drill a hole in the bottom to drain the bleach. filled with water, and then used white silicone to plug the hole.

Then they'd return the bleach saying they got to much or blah blah blah... some other excuse.
