Mine was installed inside a deep 2-gang outlet box which was covered by the door chime.

Not to change the subject but I want to know how is it that my home was built in 1971,the doorbell switch was part of the package when built new and the little light has been shinning 24 hrs a day all these years and yet I am constantly seeing brand new cars just months old with tailights bulbs that have gone defunct?? :eyecrazy:

....any electrical conduit box can hold the transformer....go figure!
Mine is on a 4X4 conduit box in the basement between the joist, for the front door light switch power feed... almost halfway between the front and back door... 1949 house.
Mine was also, in my previous house built in 1953. Present house, built in 1999, didn't have one at all. I added a battery/electric wireless a few years ago.

Most I have seen are sitting inside the breaker box not mounted to anything. Must be lazy installers around here.

Current house doesn't have a doorbell

If your doorbell is not working, you could just do this, rather than fix it.

If you really need to know if anyone is at the door, you could get one of these in the yard to warn you of impending arrivals.

My door bell at the back door resembles this........... no electricity needed.

The one on the front door resembles this, lever and handle poke thru the door to the outside. Its only been used once that I know of, only one person knew what it actually was and used it properly. My front door bell came out of the house of a great great grandfather of mine, he was a doctor just after the Civil War and later on a operator of a general store.

Friend of mine didn't have, or need a doorbell.

He had a sign that said:

"GO AWAY, THIS MEANS YOU!"

He cohabitated with a bunch of women, and really didn't want any visitors.

My old house built in 1977 was mounted by the furnace. May current house built in 2006 is on the back wall of my garage up in the corner.

You may just be better off climbing into the attic to try and find where the wires come from the door bell button. Then buy a new buzzer, chime or whatever and tie it into your existing door bell button wires and mount the little transformer where you can easily reach it and hook it up to your ac supply. Most transformers I've seen were 120/16 volts. Pretty simple stuff.
