Door Lift Modification

Hey all, I just installed a lift, and need to make the door sit higher when its open. Its a really old system in there now, so Im not quite sure what I have to do to make it work. Just buy extended tracks? Thanks for your help in advance.

Need to know more about what you currently have. If you have torsion springs, normally you need a high lift track conversion which includes longer vertical tracks, new springs, cables and drums.

well theres thease big springs with cables running through them, along with some really really old pullys.

Well directly above the door is about a cinderblocks height worth of distance which is the top of the wall....then a bunch of open space....then the pitch of the roof. It was built in 1955 and is original to the garage....ill see if I can post a picture..

The white space directly abov the door is the top of the wall....then theres a space between the pitched roof and the wall. The joyces you see for the loft are no longer there, so pay no attention to those.

Torsion conversion or rolling steel, still no idea of height,headroom,etc..

Doesn't look like you can do much. looks like 12inches of headroom and not much roof pitch.

Its hard to tell from the pic, but it doesnt look like the entire track can go up much due to your ceiling height. If you realy want height you would have to redo your rafters.

You can try to cut and re-attach your tracks with a slight angle. Ive never done this personaly so its hard to explain , but have see it done and they got about another 1' or so of height differance at the end of the track ..

Well ignore the rafters running across.....they are no longer there. that was for a 2nd floor loft that was once installed....not the rood of the garage.... (the big beam....lights ect.. all have been eliminated. its actually a 3 car garage split into a double bay and a single bay....this is obviously the single) theres about a 2 to 3 foot gap between the top of the wall the door is on, and the actual lowest spot where the roof pitches up.

The actual ceiling height is at least 20 feet or so in the center.....but its a pitched roof. Ill get exact measurements tonight....

If the joists run crossways to the door you are out of luck.

You may be able to sneak the door between any cross ways joists but it would take a pro to do it.
You need custom tracks and new springs.

Your decision, but I don’t see the return on the investment.

ok that makes more sense. If the rafters and lights arent there you can buy a track extender to bring you closer to the ceiling at the point right above the door. And then angle the tracks. Or you could keep the track hight at the door the same and just angle the tracks with some modification like I mentioned in the post above. Not sure exactly how much you would gain though.

Most seem to use torsion springs with angle tracks but maybe you can use either.

There are no joists. They have been removed. Ignore the top half of the picture, they were holding a loft that isnt there anymore.


Im not looking for a return on investment....im looking for a way to opend my door all the way now that my lift is built.
