Looking for some assistance with an issue I’m having with my door opener. It’s a craftsman opener from 1994 chain drive 1/2hp. It ate the Teflon gear so I replaced it. So what it does is it won’t close without holding the button and the light blinks like the safety sensors are bad. I tried disconnecting them and shorting them to bypass. But does the same thing. Also did this with the door disconnected from the trolly. As soon as it starts down it blinks and reverses. Was doing this before it ate the gear too.

First disconnect the trolley and run the motor by itself, if it works both ways and the problem is the door is too heavy or binding.

It does it with or without the door attached. Only on the close. Or do you mean disconnected the chain?

Check on your opener for two buttons that may have "up" /down" written on them. If it has them, they can be used while letting the door travel the tracks, to turn "slightly" to adjust any out of adjustment door closing/opening travel range settings. And your chain tension if set right, should allow it to hang down about a 1/2 inch off the bottom of its track, when it is traveling and not pulled as tight as a frogs skin. :) .

I only have a single open/close button. I’ve adjusted the open close limits and also maxed the force to max with no change.

I really think it’s the safety issue or a trolley bind. I greased the track up pretty good.

i had problem like this a few years ago. finally figured out that the electric eyes have one or more components that are cold sensitive. Bought a pair of new sensors (they come in pairs - one sends signal, the other receives.) Anyway, problem solved.
And I had tried lots of stuff before I came to figure out it was the sensors.
Where I am it does not get as cold as PA.

If your travel adjustments are good, then yep...check those door safety beam sensors for malfunctioning, any travel limit switched if applicable, /chain/gear or track binding. Just make sure all moving parts operates in their full intended range of motion freely, with no sticking points. Good Luck with it .

Your symptoms are consistent with bad or misaligned sensors.

You cannot make the opener work by shorting or disconnecting the sensors. The opener is looking for a series of pluses from the sensors. If alignment and wiring check out the only fix is new sensors or a replacement opener.

So there is no way to bypass sensors? I’d like to confirm it’s sensors they buy sensors and need a new opener anyway.

There is no simple way to bypass the sensors. First, are both lights on the sensors on? One is the sending, one is the receiving. If one or both are out, you may have a wiring issue. Cut the wire about 12" from each sensor. Tape the eyes to each other so they can see each other. Wire the short pigtails directly into the opener. If it continues to blink on the down stroke, good chance the eyes are faulty. If no response, no lights on units, circuit board probably faulty. This is just a test. Please do not operate the door with the safety features disabled.

I appreciate the info. I just wanna test and find out what’s wrong before I spend money on an opener from 1994 lol.

After years of maintaining my 1987 Craftsman opener, I replaced it a few years ago. I was quite happy with how quiet and smooth the new unit is. And the light has a motion sensor that is very convenient when walking into the garage from the house. Treat yourself to a new unit.

The opener was designed so that it is all but impossible to bypass the sensors.

They want to be sure no opener with bypassed sensors could ever crush a child to death.

I like to repair my old stuff as much as anyone but after 25 years of service it is time for a replacement. It is not like the old openers works better than new openers or it will be a collector’s item someday.

If it were mine I would replace it.

Where did you get the Craftsman opener from? Just curious with the state of Craftsman stuff being sold multiple places now that Sears sold off the Craftsman name.

I picked it up at my local sears. It had a list price of $309 and sale price of $249. Non battery backup one was $229. They are apparently the same as chamberlaind models.
