I have a 11 tall by 16 wide door. Not planning on using a remote much and do not want a keypad. Liftmasters website says the 3900 is the only option but I know there's gotta be more.

any door that has a pushbutton option leaves you open to other things to control
I like using my homelink which I have in all my vehicles,as well as 2 push buttons next to the entry door for each garage door.

If you go with a chain drive it is easy to use a longer rail for your extra height.
Then with a well balanced door you should be able to go with a regular unit.
Most have plastic gears, so a every 6 mo.s check for door balance will keep it healthy.
(For some reason doors seem to gain weight over time.)

For a door that tall and wide I'd look at a commercial rated opener. Liftmaster makes many openers and they make some medium duty jack shaft openers call a local door company or a liftmaster dealer and look at the options

I have the Liftmaster 3800 on a 16x10 std insulated door and it works fine. The nice thing is the jackshaft type keeps the opener away from the center area (such as clearance for a lift), and you just adjust the opening "turns". No extended track or guide for the opener is needed.

Pretty simple to install yourself. Maybe 2-3 hrs on a Saturday. I'd think anyone that participates in this board has the skill to do it. I've put 2 on the house, and one on the shop. By the time I did the third one I had it down to under 2 hrs.

Also, I'd suggest calling Liftmaster yourself. Don't take the local shops word on this. And then, go order it from Amazon and save yourself about 10%....

What did they say about an 8500? It's a very nice unit and considered residential so I'd assume you would get a quote lower than $800 installed.
Only problem I see is that the 8500 is limited to 10 operations per hour.

I do not understand the "door is too heavy" argument.
Isn't that what the springs are for?

I'd look into the MJ opener it's a jack shaft opener and built to handle a door of your size. Yes a residential jack shafts should be able to open the door, but at the size door you mentioned, that is not a "residential sized door" the medium duty jack shaft is actually produced for a door in this general size and weight range. As far as the whole door being too heavy argument, it is a valid point no matter what anyone may think. Yes the springs are suppose to balance the door. But a heavy door is a heavy door no matter what. Who is to say the door is balanced properly? Not every door is and would you rather spend 500 bucks on a residential jack shaft and have it break in a year or two, or get a medium duty and know that it will work for years to come. The residential jack shafts are driven by plastic gears and thin chains. The medium duty is all metal with thick gears and bicycle chain. Just my two cents as a commercial garage door tech for over 12 years.
