Door openers

Recently bought two residential overhead garage door openers (used) but manufactured in 2010. Both are identical Chamberlain 3/4 HP chain drive. The garage has never had openers before. The doors are 10' x 7'9". Estimates to do the install are the better part of five times what I paid for the two. Even at current retail price the estimate for each door installation is substantially more than the opener. The install is on exposed trusses so no finished ceilings are involved. Anyone care to provide me a opinion of what a "normal" garage door opener installation would cost?

Very few garage door companies will install a used opener. Many only deal with specific brands and sell/service them. There are liability issues with all the safety mechanisms, never mind any sort of guarantee on the install.

Really, you can probably install them yourself in a few hours. Download the install instructions if you don't have them.

I paid $125 per opener to have Liftmaster 3800s installed.

An opener like the one you're describing can be installed by two guys in under an hour, easily.

Having installed multiple garage door openers myself, I can tell you it would take "me" about an hour to install both of your openers with open trusses. About double that with a finished ceiling since the sensor wires have to be fished through the ceiling/walls.

All the ones I've installed are Chamberlain manufactured. The first few were rebranded with the Craftsman name.

I installed the last one in 2011. The rails on this last one simply push together and have snap locks. No bolts to install. Goes even quicker.

Check your area for a local handyman if you're not a DIY type. He shouldn't charge more than 2 hours labor to do both in my experience.

My "normal" quote is 125 each, but that assumes I'm providing a few key parts (so price often goes down). Most installers won't touch used, I'm not usually so picky, but I tend to build relationships with customers, so its easier to say - can't warranty the opener, but can my workmanship

This was the low quote. Can anyone provide a reason why I shouldn't look elsewhere?

Is the rail long enough for a 7' 9" door? Standard height for a residential door is 7'

But the chamberlain/craftsman retail rails haven't changed in decades, a new 8' extension kit still works on even 20yr old units... a decent installer should have one on his truck...

An even better installer could slap a super sneaky operator bracket drop the rail appropriately and probably get it to open fully on a 7' rail. Yeah, gotta remove those crash/limit bolts and geometry isn't perfect - but it can be done.

The price of the door opener install looks a little steep but if they are also a licensed electrician and are getting a permit to add outlets for $60.84 that part seems reasonable.

NOT high end anywhere. In the suburbs outside of Pittsburgh. I was hoping for no more than $300 for both. The electric is available from a light switch and the run is less than 40' for one opener and 20' for the other. That I can do. I hate to spend the time doing it on my own but to save, I might as well. Besides it'l keep me off the streets and out of trouble, for at least a day or two..
