I am planning to start building a shop in the next month and would like to maximize my door height. I have always gone by the 2' rule of thumb, 2' less then ceiling height for overhead door sizing. I know I can get 12" clearance track. That does not allow any room for an opener. I have read some threads on here where guys have referenced a Liftmaster 3800. I would love to hear from some of you out there about these. Are they any better then the old "iDrive" units Wayne Dalton used to sell? I ask because I had a couple of those and they were trouble. Thanks for any information.

I have a 12' door with 13' ceiling in my addition. Normal tracks used. Some model of Liftmaster but would need to climb up and check.

I have two liftmaster 3800s lifting a 8x16 foot and a 8x12 foot door in a room with a 10'6" ceiling height. It's minor, but I wish I had gone with 9' doors (make it easier to pull my truck in with a kayak on top or back my sailboats in with the masts on the trailers easier).

I love my 3800 openers.

I have two LM3800 openers on 8 ft doors. they work perfectly. Had a devil of a time getting the track raised on the 16ft door that opens under the 10 ft ceiling part of my garage. Had I had 9 ft doors, he track wpuld have hugged the ceiling just fine. On the other 10 ft wide door, it follows the 4/12 slope of the ceiling in the lift bay.

BTW - LM3800 will not work on Wayne Dalton doors per Liftmaster documentation. Recommend you go to their web site.

Good to know. I have not settled on a door manufacturer yet, although leaning towards Copay or Overhead Door Co.

Thanks again to all.
