Okay, I'm going to try to detail my new opener install here. With pictures and everything!

History:

We bought this house about 1 1/2 years ago. The current openers (well one anyway) is the original 15 year old unit. It is a chain drive. It died a few days ago. I'm sure some one could fix it but it is very noisy and I don't have a decent remote for it. In short, I'm getting a new one! (Chance for me to actually USE my tools.)

After some searching and listening, I have decided I am going to get a Belt drive unit. My biggest reason for this is that it my garage is directly under the master bedroom. Opening and closing the doors is very loud. I am also going to attempt to mount these using a self designed isolating mount. Nothing fancy, just isolating in with rubber.

I am also going to do a few fancy "upgrades" while I'm at it. I'll save those for the pictures. Now I just need to decide which brand and how much HP I really need.

Follow along if you wish!

Well, here are some shots of the old unit. One thing I reall like about this one, comapred to the newer ones, is the motor housing. It is metal not plastic.

Wayne Dalton is a big name in garage doors and hardware...very common.

What did you get to replace it with?

Looks like the Chamberlain 248754 belt drive. 3/4 hp. Lowes has them on sale right now for $188. Normal price is $248. I'l going to get one in a little while. I might pick up two. If it is as quite as they claim, I will replace the Genie screw drive that is on the other door. That thing is the noisiest opener I have ever heard!

I just finished installing a couple of LM3800 openers on my new build. Very quiet, much more so than my screw drive on the old garage or the chain drive I had before.

Wife wants one on the old garage door as well. However, they need the solid jackshaft, and the current one is tube.

You do not need a solid shaft the hollow tubes will work just fine also.

That Wayne Dalton in the pics above is just a rebadged Liftmaster 1/3 HP.

I just hung one of these a month ago. They are great! Very quiet, very powerful, and I really like all the acc.'s that come with it. The motion activated lights are nice and the fact that you can turn them on when you need more light when working on the garage....enjoy:beer:

Well, I hate to disappoint. I hung these without snapping any pictures. Things got a little hectic around here and I needed to be able to open my garage doors! (Imagine that?) I didn't build the isolation mounts either. That will have to wait until after the holiday season.

FWIW, these are simply awesome openers! They are super quiet. They are fast too. Install was very easy and I like how the eyes mount on the track and not the wall. The motion sensor for the lights is pretty cool too. Even without the isolation mounts, we can not hear the doors opening inside the house.

Now, if I can just get the tracks to be a little quieter. Any suggestions? I haven't tried, but it there some secret to programming my Homelink units in the cars? I've tried several times and they will not open the doors. Maybe I need to re-read the manuals!

What I was working on was....

Polished aluminum "L" stock. Drilled for rubber grommets with nylon inserts. The grommets would be covered by stainless fender washers and the bolts were to be stainless also. Yeah, way overkill but it sure would look great!

If I figure out how to silence the tracks, I'm going to powder-coat them. Not real sure what colour. I was thinking red, but I think that has already been done before.
