my door was squeaking,
so i sprayed dry lube on the hinges;
squeak went away

few days later- there is a much louder squeak and door is hard to shut all the way.

any ideas on what to put on the hinges?

I have always disliked WD-40 for similar reasons. The WD-40 has a solvent that may disolve and flush out the existing lubricant. Most hinges are never lubed when they are installed. Good solid brass hinges don't need all that much lube. Brass against brass is pretty low friction. If you have brass plated steel hinges they will squeak after a while.

I would remove the pins, separate the door from the jamb hinge half and lightly grease the knuckles of the hinges and the pins.

The WD40 didn't cause the problem. Something is wrong, you will need to take the hinge pins out and see.
The WD40 just let the problem continue and deteriorate.

If you are unsure about pulling the whole door, try taking one pin out at a time. You can then clean and lube the one pin and push it back in, move to the next. Or replace it, as needed. You can even do a hinge one at a time. If you have only two hinges you have to fasten the door with something else, but I am suspecting this is three hinge door.

Is your house settling and tweekin' your door frame and putting your door under stress? My house is on piers and sloppy clay soil, the road crew had a 1" plate on a hole out front and trucks running over the plate would cause doors to open and close in the house.:shocking:
