My wife and are are building a new home that will have a porte cochere arrangement with two sets of 3-car garages. One set will be our everyday "his 'n hers" garage with an 18 x 9 door and a third single-width stall with a 10 x 10 door that should be sufficiently large to park just about anything that can pass under the porte cochere, like a Sprinter Van.

The other garage is my workshop/man cave/toy shop. It's approximately 36 x 24 with 10' 1" ceiling for about 14' of width and 12' 1" ceilings for the remaining 22 feet that's NOT situated under a bedroom overhead. This is the important garage to me at the moment.

The innermost space (of limited height) will consist of the workshop and will NOT have an overhead door. The remaining width, at present, is configured for a pair of 10' x 9' doors. The outermost space will be used for a 4-post stacking/alignment lift and the center space will have a conventional 2-post service lift.

The tracks for all doors will run all the way to the ceilings to ensure sufficient opening clearance when any cars are elevated on the lifts. Although the 10' x 9' doors will work beautifully (with 3' separating them), I've recently been questioning whether I'd be better served by using one double-width door instead (23' x 9').

Since the lifts will be bolted and fixed in place, it's not likely I'll be using either of the space behind the doors in any other way than pulling in a car in the standard way. That should make the pair of single-width doors just fine. Perhaps I've lost perspective by managing the project for so long, but I can't seem to overcome the doubt of whether or not a single all-encompassing door would be better.

I'd greatly anybody who's gone through a similar decision/consideration process sharing any relevant thoughts, perspectives and even regrets they may have experienced. It would be tremendously helpful to helping me decide and I'd be forever grateful for the useful insight.

Thanks in advance,

Remmie
