Door Selection - would like side mount and high/angled tracks

Hi All

Just submitted my permit fro my new garage. It's 24' wide with scissors trusses. Walls are 9'6" high and has scissor trusses. So mid point it 11' high. Half will be for wodd working and I handle a lot of 8'x4' sheet goods and 10' boards. The door will be 16' (7' foot high) and will be in the gable end (would have been nice if i could have rotated it 90-degrees) so the door followed the vault of the veiling.

Anyway, I'd like a side-mount motor and the rails to be as high as possible. I'd guess I could get them 10' up with a 90-degree angle. and higher if the're out and angle

I've fitted garage door openers before, but never a door. AFAIK the latter is best left to a pro. Will I be able to have the tracks 2 to 3' above the top of the door and maybe angled to maximize headroom?

What should I be looking for in a door? I assume torsion springs? Anything else?

With your side wall height I'm not sure why you aren't going with an 8' door. It would be easier to carry in sheet goods, and more height for your truck coming in and out. Also you can go with a wider door such as 18' or 20'. Makes pulling 2 larger vehicles in easier. Or backing in a trailer while a vehicle is in the other stall.

You have a couple of options.
1. high lift track that will go straight up before coming back into the garage. Can get it in different heights.
2. Follow the roof line. This would follow the angle of the ceiling. May need to be combined with a high lift.
3. Standard install with a 15" radius track which will take the door up higher than a standard track before coming in to the garage. You may be able to get an 18" radius track depending on the manufacture you use.

I would go with a steel back insulated door it will be easier clean and keep clean. You won't have any ledges to catch sawdust to drop on your head when you open the door.
Keep in mind the height above the door will be the thickness of the door and a couple inches for the rollers above the track. 4" should give you enough clearance. Unless the door is 3" and has 3" rollers then you would need more clearance.



Yes to torsion springs.

With option 1 and 2 you should only use a jackshaft opener (some have done some interesting things with trolley openers. not recommended). They (jackshaft) need a high lift of some type to help from spinning the cables off the drums.

Windows for light if needed. You can get them in any panel you want.

Doors companies have more than white for color options. The only colors I charge extra for are the ones they charge me extra for. These gives you 5 colors that have no up charge. Doors are metal and can be painted any color you want. If you do paint get a base color close to what you will paint it. You don't want white showing if you scratch it.
You can put a cool design on it if you paint it.

There is a BIG difference in quality of doors check them out ahead of time. Anything a BOX stores sells I would stay away from. For your needs you want to deal with a door company that knows what your needs are and will order in what you need. Should only take about 3 weeks to get it in.

I'm not sure who you have in your area but I was doing a lot of thinking too when I built my garage. I ended up going to American Garage Door here locally and they had all kinds of ideas. The end result was cheaper than expected too for a really good quality door. See who you have in your area and head down to their showroom and I'm sure you will get some good ideas from them.

I ended up with 16' wide and 8' high. Higher is definitely better. I have no clearance issues as some of my friends do.

Thanks for replies. I only have one car and no truck. I either use a roof rack to bring them home or have them delivered. I'm already over budget on the build, so trying to do stuff that really matters. An 8 foot door doesn't really matter to me. (I always carry and store sheet goods on the 8 foot side. Where I need the height is when i stand them up in the garage

Stupid question - So if I was to buy a torsion spring door myself and install in in the rough opening during framing, what would I need a pro for (nothing against pro's BTW: happy to pay for what I need them to do, I just have no clue what else is involved other installing door/tracks and motor) and what would it typically cost for them to do their bit?

I've read in a few places that a garage door place can supply and install a door for the same price as if I bought myself and paid them to install. Is this the fact?

What would I be looking at for basic, white (no windows) decently insulted door, installed?
