My garage door stopped closing. The door opens fine but when it tries to close it will move an inch and then the light on the opener flashes and the door opens back up. The lights on the sensors stay on (red and green). I have cleaned them and adjusted them a few times to be sure they are not on the edge of where they should be. Could the sensors be bad even though the lights are on?

What brand and model of opener is it? Sometimes the programming gets lost and you may have to reprogram it.

Does it have a cable tension sensor? If you mechanically disconnect the opener, (typically RED handle), does the door open and close OK manually? As stated, limit settings as well as tension programming can get lost.

I'm gonna go with sensors not lined up or bad sensor
We moved here a few years ago and didn't get a manual. I've looked online and it says 1 flash of the green light means faulty sensor, incomplete programming, or sensor obstruction. I will start with replacing the sensors. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Double check force adjustment if sensors are aligned OK. What do the RED/GREEN lights on the main unit show? Both should be OFF. If ON, the programming is not complete.
There's only one light... It is flashing green. One flash then a pause and repeat. I have attempted to set the up and down positions without any help. I hit the wall button and it does the same thing. I adjusted the force to see if that helped, but it only made the opener light flash 5 times and still not close. So I put it back.

I don't know how your unit mechanically works but my opener has a position sensor inside that is operated by a gear. The screw holding the gear became loose and was slipping and threw the position sensor out of whack and the door would go down about a foot and then go back up. I tried reprogramming the opener but nothing worked until I opened up the opener and saw the gear slipping. Once I tightened the gear it fixed the problem.
When mine did that, it was because either the tracks were out of line with each other or the rollers weren't rolling well. The motor had to push too hard to get the door down and I guess something in the motor sensed that it was pushing too hard, so it went back up.
Also, the guy said he had to "balance" the door. He tested the balance by pulling the door 1/2 way down and seeing if it would stay there or if it would try to move up or down by itself.
I dont know much about doors, but for what it's worth, that's what happened to me.....

During late winter/early spring time, the angel of the sun hits one of the sensors of my install and disturbs the beam signal. It appears as abroken beam/obstruction. After cleaning and re-aiming sensors still had same problem. Discovered problem went away when 1 car was parked in driveway in position to block sun. Also check that tracks are not deflecting during use and causing temporary mis-alignment of sensors. Disconnect door from opener and check operation for binding, misalignments and oil rollers.
While the door is disconnected from the opener run it and check the travel.
It closes and opens fine manually, how is the balance?

This is good advice. It does appear as though you have a travel issue. Either the travel registration of the door has shifted causing the door to stop short of it's full travel range, or there's something obstructing the travel of the door itself.
