Hi

Would a prehung door with a 2x4 jam work fine, or with minimal "extra" work in a 2x6 wall?

Sure. The "easy" way would be to set it flush with one side, then rip you some trim pieces to finish out the other. A little more work would set it in the middle. At our old house, the back bedroom wall bordering the kitchen was 5" thick. I set the door flush with the kitchen side so that looked "normal" from the living areas and just custom trimmed out the bedroom side.

Attached - door on right. All that trim you see had to be cut to fit anyway. Every inch.

Go to Lowe's, Home Depot or Menards and they sell Jamb extension kits. This includeds an extension for the threshold also.

Easy to do. Jamb extensions, or ripped 1x to fill the difference out to sheet rock face.

I just did mine, be aware that the door will not be able to swing all of the way open because it will hit the extra deep jamb. If it opens into a 90* corner you will be fine.

Most people extend the jamb on the interior side on exterior doors. The correct way is to extend the exterior side and extend the threshold (not necessary). Then you will have no problems opening the door.

DOH!

I meant that it is done, but on the "outside" of the door. The side it swings away from. You want to flush the hinge side of the jamb to the sheet rock face on one side, and build out the other side.

All of the in stock doors that i have found have a brick mould already so most people will incorrectly extend the inside jamb. I just didn't feel like ordering one for a 2x6 wall. If I had thought about it more I would have just got one that opened the other way into the corner but I knew that way wouldn't open flush against the wall so ya "DOH!". Maybe one day I will extend it in but I don't really care for the look.
