Doors: Material delays

We went over to the new house project yesterday. The interior doors were finally delivered .. 5+ months for delivery! My project is now past the 1 year mark and we waited 6+ months for it to start.

The delays in getting materials is really unbelievable -- these were made to the architect specification and would have been 8 weeks at the most. We have been waiting for some millwork since January .. same with new widow sash for the oldest windows. can't get stuff

They came out nice -- more milling marks than I would have liked ... tell me it's normal (don't they always) ... some sort of high build primer that gets sanded. They had sent previous picture. They get primed again and two top coats.

7+' tall 36" wide and 1.75 thick white oak .... I can't move them. Around 15 ... Even the short ones for an odd closet are heavy. I'm glad that none got damaged -- can't deal with any more problems

They say it's getting materials and internal shutdowns ....

Companies had to shut down last year and then used up material as they reopened. When they got going again materials started to run dry ....... then they got hit with internal illness shutdowns. Then the material suppliers shut down.

Companies had tried to hold/ store as much material as possible late last year .... but, that gets dangerous. What if the market changes and you get stuck with expensive material?

My builder said high quality lumber has doubled. I'm on a contract from 2019 .... subs are getting squeezed. Thankfully -- everything was ordered last summer (for the most part)

The local millwork companies seem to be able to get material from local suppliers. If you screw people -- everybody remembers!

Are those who are waiting for material realizing that "Just in Time" is a concept that works only in a perfect world?

The material delays and cost increases for new construction are awful.

We now order garage doors and appliances when we dig the hole.

Interior doors have gone from 3-4 weeks to 8-12 as OP experienced.

I’ve stalled houses 1 month to ensure that engineered joists and trusses would hit when needed to avoid weathering of partial framed units.

And on and on....

Meanwhile I’m starting a kitchen remodel at my house:confused::dunno:

I ordered appliances more than 6 months in advance. This is "unusual" in construction as normally draws are granted when appliances are installed. Basically owners (and I suspect GCs) are going to have to float a lot more cash up front to be sure that supplies are ready.

I just got a Raynor garage door installed today. It took 9 months to get it built and another 1-2 months to get an appointment for an installer. Our build time is going to exceed 18 months on a project that was "guaranteed" to be done in 11.

I agreed back in the fall of 2019 .... it was to start 12/19. Weather did delay it until 1/21. Finish was to be 9/20 ... I'm at least another 2 months. I'm in that same boat.
