Walmart online clearance Dorman Pro Pack Standard Grade 8 Hardware assortment (1/4,5/16,3/8) 132 PC, Dorman 799-301D for $4.80. Amazon has the same kit currently for $12.74. Walmart offers free shipping on $35 orders. Back in September, Walmart had offered the metric version of this kit (799-305D) on clearance for $4.17.

coming from dorman at that price I would strongly suspect off spec Chinesium ****.
I have a pile of the metric ones - have not had a quality problem
Not sure they'd necessarily test to spec, but better than a lot of the cheap bolts

Never had a problem with Dorman hardware.

Probably / possibly sourced from the same place Hillman gets theirs. Both are imports. Hillman stocks all the ACE, HD, TSC etc bins I have seen in recent years. Dorman stocks auto parts stores. Both are distributors, not manufacturers.

Got my two this morning.

Not too impressed compared to the Hillman from TSC. The washers are thin, and I doubt if they’re actually grade 8. The bolts feel cheesy. We’ll see how they do.

Not one of my better purchases.

I've said this before on other threads, but if you want to test one, use a washer under the part you turn and tighten it to 1.5X the torque spec. Then loosen and go to 1.6, then loosen and 1.7... In theory, they should fail around 1.8-1.9X the torque spec.

I've seen some pretty thin grade 8 flat washers before, including from McMaster. I like the "SAE" style that have a smaller OD and are thicker.

Mine arrived also and were in the plastic compartment boxes. I think the washers are decent — I have seen thinner. I bought enough to get free shipping and will give a couple to my father in law.

Mine arrived yesterday, 8 total. One unopened box of 5 and 3 separate, all in plastic compartment boxes.
I'll keep a few for the workshop / hangar / cabin and gift the others. Not bad for the price.

I bought a kit a while back.at Schicks when I was out of town. Was the only thing they had for bolts.

But yeah. Not great. And the coating is a different color than normal.

I treat them as grade cheese bolts. Fine for stufflike putting mud flaps on a truck.

They may be ok.. I’m sure they’re useable for something. I guess the big things I noticed is the color is different, like you pointed out, but that’s probably not an issue. Just never saw that before, and they seem to have sharp edges, almost as if they skipped a slurry deburr operation or something.

The order came in today. Nice. At 70 years, these days, and in the recent past, I generally just tool up with fasteners as needed for projects as they come along. But, the price was too good to pass up. And while I did recently purchase some 100/+ packs of stainless flat washers in those exact SAE sizes, the addition of these fasteners filled many empty spots right up in my fastener boxes.

Thanks for the heads up on these.

I am perfectly happy with mine - they refill part of the bolt bin

That said, your comment on the edges is accurate. The washers and nuts are fine, but the bolt heads are all sharp edged. Kind of odd, exactly like they missed a deburring operation

I hope that I will be happy with my 8 packs - if they are ever found! Got the Delivered email, went out but no one in sight and ... no package anywhere :headscrat Package theft is not a problem plus no one was around. I am guessing wrong address but the neighbors did not get it either. Oh well, I did have some qualms about cheap grade 8's. I going back to the USA fair-price-for-a-fair-bolt plan.

Delivery wasn’t the quickest on mine, and the carrier wasn’t someone I heard of before.

My package, per Fedex (destroyed). So I had the wife call Walmart and are resending 8 packs today.

Follow up on bolts not delivered - Fedex was no help, could not find out what happened. I then chatted with the Walmart AI bot which gave me a number to call. A human answered, took down some info and issued a refund. So much for my experimenting with inexpensive grade 8's!
FedEx is awful, I know you had no control over it but I avoid them like the plague, even more then USPS. UPS is the king tho

Walmart support has been oddly helpful for me as well. I got black beans once instead of black jelly beans. Refund issued without a question

I ordered 6, they were delivered by FedEx a few minutes ago, in standard Dorman packaging. Wonder why the difference?

My 8 , re-send (barely made it) showed up today. Now I understand why my 1st shipment never made it. The order was drop shipped from Dorman in a Dorman box. The box was barely tapped. In fact the bottom tape wasn't even centered on the flaps of the box
