i have a double bay and would like a triple to eliminate a top box. or a double with a side cart. triple looks cleaner to me.

depends on how much horizontal space you have as well......

none of the above..

i prefer multiple single bay boxes...and multiple side boxes

easier to move, (especially by yourself)

easier to reconfigure
for the space available and as needs change

i can have tools and boxes in my service truck, at the shop, in the garage, and in the basement.

just recently moved my kr550/555b from the shop to home...

I like big double banks. My krl 1022 is just that I can move it from one shop to another relatively easily. Fully loaded, three guys can push it up a ramp and two guys can guild it down. Beside the added weight, I see a triple getting high centered going up ramps, especially ones with center casters. I think some guys forget they will probably have to move those gigantic boxes someday.

Between the two, a double, but I agree with Crewchief above. A 33-36" is a real nice size and allow a good bit of storage over a 27" box for the floor space. Although KR1000, 660 or the like would be a nice setup. Which is essentially a ~33" box with a built in side cabinet. However as Crewchief says, maneuverability especially alone, goes way down.

KRL1033 for me. Obviously more room, and I love my long drawers. I saw it as a 2 bay, with some gloriously long drawers, and an extra set of drawers slapped on the side. Those big drawers really sold me, especially the 3inch one; which holds ALL my wrenches. :D

The extra top space is nice, but it does leave my chargers/jump-pack exposed. Co-workers have tried to use it a shelf for their things, water-bottles, phone chargers, etc. I piled them all on the floor next to the sink, and they haven't come back. :) It's a good writing space, since my cart a zero room for anything else.

Moving any box is a pain. Not sure how I'd move this one. I doubt a normal pick-up would hold it, maybe an 8 foot bed? Honestly, I think a trailer might be the way to go.

EDIT: To move the boxes, I typically put two rack arms under them, lift it with two stabilizer helpers, then back a pickup underneath. It's a *****, but there's no ramp pushing involved. The flat-bed option seems easiest though, not sure how much the KRL would like getting picked up like that.

I bought a 1022 (double bay) that my driver had on his truck for a while. It was a good upgrade from the kra I had before but only a few months later and I wish I had a triple bay epic honestly. I'm a new pro tho so I add tools weekly but a three bay epic would be the end of my needs. At least since I'm in a newer snap on box that I wax and cover i'll get my money back on a trade in.

A lot of people say tools first then a toolbox big enough/heavy duty enough and I'm growing to disagree. I'd rather have spent the money once and had more than enough than deal with the hassle of swapping boxes again.

In a few years we may be discussing whether a guy should have a 4 or a 5 bay box and all the 2 and 3 bay models will be passe. The wider the drawers the better imo.

I prefer 2 bay. I move my box all around our shop from job to job so having a 3 bay becomes a pain. ive had both and currently have a 2 bay and would never go back.

I like big boxes, I cannot lie, you other brothers can't deny!

Actually a two bay is about tops for me. We really don't have the room for triple bays in the shop, plus having to frequently move the box means smaller is better.

Same here. I've got a 1033 and I love it. Lots of room and those big drawers are amazing. I use the 3 inches for my sockets and ratchets. It holds everything, and it seems like the more weight it has in it the smoother is slides.

P.S. Only real way of moving the 1033 IMHO is with a tilt-bed. I honestly wouldn't want to have to pick mine up with a forklift to get it in a truck. You gotta think; just under 1000lbs unloaded....

I have worked my up through mostly larger boxes. First one was a KRL761 way back when, if I remember it right. Mostly just because the deals where right and I needed more space. Not really any plan or reason. I know moving a big box will be a PITA, but I've stayed at the same company since 95. The shop moved to a new building once - I used an enclosed trailer and pulled drawers and laid them on the floor till the box was more than half empty. Then I was able to roll the box up in the trailer........Besides, after all this time, when I go, the work of moving the 10 foot long Epiq, even I spend a day disassembling the locker and emptying drawers, will not bother me one bit!

Instead of buying a bigger box, I have added more toolboxes. Besides my 1022, I have a kra 62c road chest, a classic 60 roll cab and a old, but like new Kennedy three drawer roll cab. I don't know how big of box I'd have to buy to get everything in one.

My 54" KRA2422 is just the right width, I can reach both ends of the box easily, I do wish it was a few inches deeper though.

Maybe I am just ignorant on the topic but what is the actual definition of a double bay vs a single bay or triple bay? Is there a particular size dimension associated with it?

For the record I absolutely love my Mac Mb1800 60" box. My itty bitty craftsman bottom chest and top chest served me well for a while but when tool storage is necessary, you absolutely need it.

It is the number of columns of drawers, besides the top 1 or 2 that go completely across the box.

I have been looking at a KRL1056, to use as a cart. My goal is to have the biggest single bay box, does anyone know of a bigger single bay?

The biggest technical single bay would be the 66" wide Mac macismizer with 7 full width drawers. Matco also offers a full width drawer box based on their double bank, but that is only 55" wide.

^this...

i've been "adding on" boxes since '85 or so.

"back in the day" there were no double, triple or quad bank boxes.

a SO taco cart was the big box.

and (nearly all) toolboxes were RED

i'd guesstimate if i had to have all my tools in one place, be organized, and didnt want multiple boxes, a triple bank top and bottom with 2 side lockers
i might get everything in.......or not.

I don't think I'd want to have more than one box. I am pretty much sol on the epiq 84 when the right deal comes by.

Thanks for posting the bobcat. I will look into those but they may be too big to use for a cart. I can't believe I just typed that. I will check them out though. I want it to use as a big cart. I don't want it to weigh more than a car loaded though.

A 66" wide by 27" deep macismizer would make one hell of cart. That would be like using an eqip as a cart.

I don't miss my 54" box at all since switching to a 72". Old was a krl7022 with krl1201 top box. Next box is a krl1032
