My sister and bro-in-law have a garage that is 2 wide by 2 deep. It works nice as the back portion is the work area and the front is for daily drivers. They live in Denver area with snow so the inside parking is nice for the DD's.

I would not say it is ideal, but given they live in a neighborhood with smaller lot, and an HOA that prevents any external garage, this is the best solution for them. My BIL's only problem is too much kid junk getting stuffed into the work area.

I'm in the process of building a 4 car garage that's 2 cars wide and 2 deep. A common name for this is tandem garage, if you're trying to google it.
I'm putting on office and some storage over the front half, and the back half will have high ceilings for working on cars (lifts, etc).

Double deep is a good concept, depending on what you use it for. Building wider would work best for me, since I want the space for cars and don't want to shuffle them when I decide to drive the one in the back. If I was more of a wood worker though I'd just have the two daily drivers up front and all the wood tools set up in the back.

What do you call double deep?

My garage is twenty feet wide and thirty-two feet deep. My car and Jeep will fit end to end in one bay. I'd prefer that it was wider, I don't see any advantage having to shuffle vehicles around to take the seldom used one out. I'd change it if I could but its already built to the maximum limits for my city lot.

I have a tandem garage too. When we added on a couple years back, I had to go deep due to clearance issues on my lot. Our house is a bi-level set in a hill. I had nowhere else to go but out the front. About half is in ground. No attic in mine, due to master suite above. (No lift for me dammit) 56' x24', but like others have said; you can't make it too big. I consider the "far end" to be project land with a little shop area and the end closest to the doors to be the everyday driver parking. The doors are on the downhill, (walkout) backside of the house. I can park 6 cars in there if I have to. (or about a dozen Smart cars if I had em!!)

Here's a pic from another board that gives an idea about layout. Don't have any good pix of the garage handy.

Stair cases eat up alot of room, if I built my garage again I would put it on the outside using PT lumber like a deck stairs. Pull down is good, but a ***** with bigger, heavier stuff. Just don't put alot of scrap up there that you will have lug down if you move. When I cleaned my parents house attic out my back hurt for 2 months!

IMHO, you're much more likely to use the upstairs storage if there's a solid fixed staircase instead of a rickety pull-down.
If you put the staircase against a wall it doesn't take up too much room and you can store a lot of stuff under it.

I have Heavy Duty Pull down stairs in my House leading to my attic...300 lbs max.
And I have a Staircase in my Garage going up the second level or Loft. (15 years now)

I am very glad that I went that route.
just plan them very carefully to not eat up too much space.
(along one side, along the Back wall, a landing and turn, etc)
Plus plan out storage under them, like compressor or Handwash station.
you will be glad you did.

I dont want my stairs outside...Rain, snow or cold.
Once I am in my Garage, I can take stuff up or down with ease (no stairs to shovel snow off of in the winter, or icy build up to fall on)

Just my 2 Cents.

My dad had a house with a traditional two car garage at the main level and a triple deep single car in the walk out basement. He had room to store his boat and Kubota tractor indoors in line and still have room for a full shop.

I wouldn't want to park my daily driver in a basement garage but the extra space worked out perfectly for him as storage/workshop.

thanks for the input fellas. i see how the pulldown stairs can be a pain as well as how the fixed staircase can just plain get in the way. I will have to put alot of thought into it as this will be the last house/garage i own..

I CAN FIT 6 CARS IN MY GARAGE BUT THATS ALL NOTHING ELSE. LIKE I SAID BEFORE I SHOULD OF BUILT IT BIGGER LIKE 4 MORE FEET WIDE AND DEEP SO I WOULD HAVE ROOM FOR A BENCH/TOOL BOX/OPENING CAR DOOR.BUT THEN AGAIN MY ORIGINAL PLAN WAS TO BUILD 24x30 AND I BUILT 26x40 GLAD I DID STILL WISH IT WAS BIGGER. KEVIN54 THAT GREEN TRUCK IS A 70 GMC C 10.

I built my garage 24' wide by 48' deep. I can fit 4 cars or 6 ricers in it, but I don't have any ricers, so it holds 4 cars.

My dad built double deep and loves it. Also did a real staircase on backwall for storage and im pretty sure its the best decision they made for the garage.

Mine is also a double deep, 24x40. They are never big enough once you finish building them. lol Three cars a motorcycle and a work-space. Big enough for my needs. Always go bigger than you think you'll need. As far as the pull down stairs, great idea,as long as you dont have to drag a lot of heavy junk up there. That's why I didn't put in up-stairs storage space. Trying to weed out the junk.

Mine is a 30x48. I wanted a full fixed staircase. The pulldown stairs aren't really big enough or safe enough for what I wanted. Now that I've been in the garage awhile and all the inspections are done, it can be a pain. The lift is in the back. To do any work on a daily driver I have to move the project cars out of the way. A lot of shuffling vehicles. If it's all you have space for then it's a good compromise. The link to mine is in the sig.

My garages are usually for Jeeps, or something short like that. My last house was 22x32, and I had fit 4 Jeeps in there 2x2, but no room for anything else. But what I was able to do was turn one sideways. So I had 2 Jeeps in the front, then one sideways then that left enough room for a workbench and tools along the back wall.

I guess my point is certainly better than a normal 20x20. It will let you have a 2 car space, then a 20x20 work area behind that. Even better if you can put a roll up door on the side, to pull in a car into that work area.
