Double Garage in the UK

Hi All,

Been lurking here for a while and already got a lot of inspiration from many the the dedicated forum members, especially Jack Olsen with the 12 Gauge Garage - a personal favourite of mine....

This is a pretty standard double garage by UK standards. Personally I think having a single door would have made life easier working on the Range Rover but unfortunately the joists sit on the central brick pier so changing this is prohibitive cost wise and I like that the design blends in with the other 29 house in the Close.

This is how it started off after living here for eight years - the first year I moved in I boarded the loft space for extra storage but haven't done much else except fill it full of stuff - too much stuff....

So the first two jobs were to declutter and paint the walls. Got a bulk buy of external masonry paint from ScrewFix.

Tried spraying it at first but wouldn't cover well. So I resorted to the brush and it still took 3 coats to cover.

The painting is still in progress as I move stuff around. I also swapped two units around at the back so I could keep my working area to the left of the garage as you view it from the front doors, storage to the right. The storage units are slim so it gives me more access to the cupboards when the Rangie is in the garage....

From the last two pictures you'll see the left hand side is the side with the most paintwork left to finish......been too cold to paint the last few days with freezing weather - I like it to be 5 degrees or more otherwise the paint takes forever to dry....

Like you I have a twin door double garage. In an attempt to get some of the storage items out of my garage I put a shed behind it. The compressor lives in it (piped into the garage) along with extra wheels for my MGB, spare wings, a gearbox and parts of an engine.

Your idea preserving working space by keeping things that restrict it to one side is a good one. I could do with a reorganisation in my garage to achieve the same.

We're planning on building a bard behind the garage this year if funds allow. It's 3.5 x 5.5 meters, it could be a great storage space but "The management" wants a hot tub in it. It sits at 90 degrees to the back of the garage - there is no access to it other than through the porch which is only a meter wide.

I think it will become storage for the push bikes the rest the hot tub. At least the push bikes won't be cluttering the space.

I've managed to get my 3hp belt drive compressor under the bench (donated by a friend) and the smaller one I will hang on the wall. I started making a metal shelf (like the one in the welding projects thread) for my jack stands and the mig welder died half way through. I was going to do something similar for the direct drive compressor.

What can't be taken off the floor will be on castors - like the band saw - made a proper standard for out out of 3mm box section to replace the flimsy sheet steel one....

Hi Martin,

Thanks but I don't think it will ever be as "polished" as jacks 12 Gauge.....I love all of the different types of vehicles you have in yours and the fact that it's a working garage....

Cheers Darren, it's only a working garage when I feel like it, and in this cold damp weather I don't. Hope to get the woodburner up and running soon, but the good lady has a few jobs for me in the house:mad:
Where in the uk are you?
Martin.

Painting the walls white has made a terrific difference. It always seems to lighten a brick garage more than a block garage too.
