We know we need a second panel to upgrade a big shop expansion. Going too 320a with 2 200a panels. In doing so, we need to replace the meter with a double lug variety to supply both panels... (Unless there is a better way...maybe that is the question.).

Question, based on the pictures, could he put the panel near the existing meter? Concern is if it is to far away, the the utility will need to run a new line from the transformer to the new meter. $$$$

Pictures of existing meter, gap, and new meter base....

What other details do you need??

Thanks GJ sparkiesView attachment 918435IMG_20190813_213737.jpegIMG_20190813_213639.jpgMVIMG_20190813_213845.jpg

Chances are they will have to run a new wire any was going from 200 to 320 amp bet the wire is rated for 200 only call the local power co as the pipe might also be to small for the larger wire

You are not replacing the meter, you are replacing the meter pan/base.

first step is contacting PoCo. They will tell you if wire needs to be upgraded.
Yep and local building authorities. Some locations do not allow double lugs, PERIOD !

IMHO, the best solution is a combination meter base and load center. Most of these have space for 4 or 8 240V breakers. This is you "first disconnect" and your ground goes here. You system bond goes here also. Run 4 wires to each of your 200A panels. No bonding in these panels. (Bonus - you can locate each load center closer to where the loads are.)

WARNING ! When you get above 200A the cost of these things goes through the roof !! :shocking:
