Doweling jig

Has anyone ever homemade a doweling jig - i am in the process of building a work bench with doors on the bottom storage area and i want to build the doors with a dowel pin for crner strenght, should i cut the corners square or at a 45 degree, i remember back in high school we had a clamp on doweling jig **** i have not seen them in any stores - so i thought maybe some one could tell me how to make one - - - or does anyone have a better way of making the doors?????

I am not sure what you mean by "a dowel pin for crner strength"??
Cut what at 45 degrees?
Are you building rail and stile doors, with a panel center?
If so, and if they are dimensional lumber parts, I'd use biscuits for the rail/stile joints.

There are many commercial dowel-drilling jigs available. They might not be in home improvement stores, but woodworking supply shops usually carry them in-store and definitely online.

Why not just use pocket hole screws? With the Kreg jig they are easy, and they work very well.

Generally, yes. it's better to use a biscuit tool but you can do biscuits with a router or table saw if you know how. I wouldn't use 45 degree miters on doors. I'd do as Steevo shows. Doweling is how they assembled doors for decades.

I'd lay the doors out like Steevo posted.

If the appearance of the backside of the doors isn't a huge concern, I'd just use a pocket hole jig as aka Larry describes. You can even buy plugs to fill the holes, but I don't find them much more attractive then the holes they plug...lol
