It's true. I'm an addict.

It started with my dad's 1966 set, including a 45170. It felt good in my 6 year old hands, spinning bolts on the wooden go-kart we built from 2x4s and a broken down pallet.

I used that set like there was no tomorrow growing up. On his Honda, on mine, on mom's minivan, on my friends cars, on anything that needed a socket.

In college, I picked up a cheap Craftsman set to get me by while I had no money.

Once I came back, I scrambled all over trying to find something like dad's set for me. eBay to the rescue, I picked up a complete 3/8 kit (sold now as 94549) for a pittance with a broken case. It formed the backbone of my collection, and still does.

Marriage, kids, and 4 jobs later, money flowed again for acquisitions.

First a 45170. Then a 42470. Then a 40970. Then a pair of 3870s. Then another 45170 and a 42470 with the diamond logos, and a set of SAE 12pt shallow knurled sockets. Then a long handled 42470.

When will it stop?

Never!

Pictures and stuff to follow with edits.

Pics soon guys, be patient. I left the only cable that fits my phone at a customer site on Monday and I can't get back to get it until tomorrow at the earliest, then I need to charge my phone to retrieve them.

In the mean time, if you want to see a couple, hit the facebook link in my sig and check out the pictures there. Some are mine, one is my dad's and there are some from other SK types as well.

I have the same bug. My Dad has a set of SK Wayne sockets and a ratchet that I used growing up. At the time I didn't understand how good that stuff was.

It will only stop when you go blind like your mother used to tell you doing that would cause.

My dad turned me on to SK at an early age. My first socket set was an SK 3/8".

Still have it, from 1981. Here it is. Along with my current Wayne 3/8" set.

I saw an almost PRISTINE S-K/Wayne 3/8" 20 or so piece set this afternoon.....and I mean hardly a scratch. Just missing the 3" extension. The plastic case it was in is from the 80's but that ratchet was a perfect as it was when it left the factory 40 some years ago. I'm currently in negotiations.

Good luck!

I just finished rebuilding the diamond logo 45170 and 42470. The knurled sockets that came with them need serious cleaning and de-rust treatment. My little solvent jars for the ratchet parts won't work for these. Time for something bigger once I get a paycheck.

OK, time for pics.

First up, my toolbox. Well, some of it.

attachment.php

Wrenches. Craftsman long pattern full polish mostly. Metric left, SAE right.

attachment.php

The screwdriver drawer is shy. No pictures.

Pliers. What a mess.

attachment.php

The measurement and auto specialty drawers are also shy.

Sockets. 1/4" and 3/8". Metric left, SAE right, ratchets in the middle.

attachment.php

More sockets. This is the 1/2" drawer.

attachment.php

Below the 1/2" drawer is the torque and misc drawer.

attachment.php

Saw blades and EZ-out case.

attachment.php

There are a few more I didn't shoot because they're boring or too messy.

And now the SK content.

First up, dad's. Purchased in 1966, metric added in 1981.
dads set by mausball, on Flickr

Now mine:

45170 by mausball, on Flickr

42470 by mausball, on Flickr

40970 by mausball, on Flickr

3870s by mausball, on Flickr

45170 and 42470 by mausball, on Flickr

In flight are another 45170, another 42470, and a 15" long 42470. Those will appear in a week or so after their respective inspections and rebuilds.

The shallow sockets I have need a lot of work before they're photo ready.

I like my SK ratchets. I have 5 of them, my favorite being the 3/8 bent handle flex. Having said that I think it's time SK introduced a new line of fine tooth ratchets in 3/8 and 1/2. Just my .02.

My understanding is that the current crop of fine tooth ratchets is different than the old ones, but I dont' know how, as I don't own any and haven't had any pass my bench for a rebuild.

The 12pt shallow 1/2" sockets I promised. This is after their first bath and scrub. They still need about a week in the solvent bath, then some time on the wire wheels.

1 1/16, 7/8, 3/4, 13/16, the ugliest 3/4 I've ever seen, 5/8, 19/32, another 19/32, and 1/2"

The bent head is nice to use for hard to reach areas near spark plugs; but even though I like sk the ratchets are not my go to for first use. I find the knurling around the handles hard on my old hands.

Gotcha. All the cars I work on are 4-bangers, so spark plug access is easy.

The 12pt set got a little wire wheel time before the solvent bath. Looking slightly better, but there's a lot of the chrome missing. Bummer. The dupes will go on eBay, the set will be completed...eventually. It's a low priority right now. I only got them because they came with a pair of ratchets.

My dad is also a big fan of S*K tools, so I grew up around the farm using them frequently. Although they perform awesome and can take abuse, I can't bring myself to buy any ratchets as I prefer ratchets with thumb selectors.

Nice collection!

...but even though I like sk the ratchets are not my go to for first use. I find the knurling around the handles hard on my old hands.

I habitually wear gloves when I use my tools, so the knurling works wonderfully for me, especially with a little grease or oil on my hands. The newer ratchets seem to have much softer knurling, which doesn't stick as well, and makes me head to eBay for older models.

My dad is also a big fan of S*K tools, so I grew up around the farm using them frequently. Although they perform awesome and can take abuse, I can't bring myself to buy any ratchets as I prefer ratchets with thumb selectors.

Nice collection!

Thanks! I use both Craftsman and SK side by side and my brain switches between the selector methods without any issue. I will say that I've never bumped an SK into reverse by accident. I've done that more than I care to admit with my Craftsman ratchets.

Ok dpaton this will either drive you insane or empty your wallet;:dunno: hope you enjoy the pictures, this is the reason I enjoy the GJ:the Kraeuter is made by SK and I love the handle very much!

Heh, neither one! I had a Facom, but sold it in a time of need. It was nice, but not nice enough to reacquire instead of a regular SK fine tooth at this point. The Kraeuters are interesting. That style of handle would tend to bite into my hands I'd think, but there's a reason there are so many kinds of handles. So many kinds of hands!

And if any of you ever want to unload some of those uncomfortable handled SK ratchets...you know where to dump them ;)

I'm an A&P mechanic from back in the day of piston engines & props & S&K were the go to ratchets & sockets of choice. The sets pictured in those green boxes bring back good memories of r2800s & r4360s.

Impressive Bill. Aircraft are about the only thing my tools haven't worked on. Not for lack of trying. I'm medical ineligible for a PPL and too far along as a business owner to jump into A&P.

I really wish the forum programmer would add the 'like' and 'mention' plugins I have on other forums (fora?). They make for a much more seamless interaction method.

First set is 1/2" drive from 1958-1962. Second picture is reverse of quality control card, signed off. Third picure is a Sherman Klove ratchet, probably 1931 or '32, my guess. Next three attachments didn't take. They were of old Craftsman ratchets and "BE" sockets, including swivel sockets, 3/8" and 1/2" drive. Next picture is a set of "BE" Craftsman deep sockets. Next one is the obverse of the quality control card for the 1/2" SK set; note price! Next is a 1/4" SK set, with three sockets marked SK Wayne, so most likely 1962 or so. And the last picture is an attempt to capture the writing on the '32 SK ratchet. The picture posting application here is very hard. It took my wife, daughter, and myself quite some time to figure it out.
