Those aren't the new junk ratchets either. Most look to be the older style that were actually decent. "Excuse me, could I have 60 rebuild kits please?"

The thing is...they have probably already been returned once.

I'm sure Sears never anticipated there would someday be something like eBay, where their returns would be resold instead of destroyed.

I would buy them and take them two by two into the various Sears stores around here. Then I would start hitting Lowes. I figure it would take 3 weeks to get all of them replaced. Then I could have a big ebay auction!

About the only other place I have seen so many broken Craftsman tools is the barrels at large Sears stores and it takes some time to fill them.

The way I understand it, every store has an associate assigned to got thru all the broken ratchets, fix those that fit the criteria, and send the rest to be destroyed. My guess is that one of these associates took them out the back door instead of sending them to be destroyed. Who knows, maybe it was something legitimate, but I doubt it.

On a different note, all of those ratchets appear to be old styles that are obsolet now. In other words, you'll probably just be able to get the standard teardrop ratchets to replace most of these. I saw some of the old "tri-wings" in there, and I know that these aren't fixable, since the rebuild kits are obsolete.

I agree. Sears makes some mistakes sometimes but they shouldn't have to replace the same ratchet more than once. There is no way that those aren't returns. You don't just accumulate 60 broken ratchets. They have probably been returned more than once already and the guy just keeps selling the same ratchets over and over.

You took the words right out of my mouth; I wouldn't be surprised if it was a employee insider "out the back door situation". Here is a story I heard about a former employee one town away from me: this guy stole one broken tool a day from the sears warranty tool bin and then collected them; he then went to another sears store and got them replaced under warranty (a little at a time to not raise any suspicions). Then he sold the tools by having a garage sale at his house; needless to say, he eventually got caught. Obviously, he was stupid but I also think it was allot of work for not much profit! We have 50 gallon drums in the warehouse and that is where all the "warranted" tools go; from what I have heard they ship them out when full and they melt them and use the steel to make new tools. The era ratchets I'm seeing in the photo would be replaced with the newer designs; we do not have the rebuild kits for the older models.

That's a neat idea.


Even if you warrantied them, though... you'd still be stuck with a bunch of Craftsman ratchets... then you'd be complaining about that!

most of those ratchets are obsolete.even if you return them and get replaced,you are going to get the junky ones.If it was me I'll get the kits for them,if still available.then put it back on e-bay.those obsolete Craftsman's fetch a pretty decent price.check some of the completed listings.

Trying to warranty all of those ratchets at once would probably use up all of the rebuilt ratchets sitting around and deplete the new stock too. I suppose you could turn a profit depending on what the final bid is. However, I feel there is a Sears in Rhode Island that lost a barrel of broken tools. Type in broken craftsman on ebay and see what comes up.

Maybe his local Sears stores got wise and stopped giving him new stuff to sell?

Loading the new crafty ratchets with grease does help.

I can't say anything for the teardrop style ones but I returned a set of older round-head ones not too long ago. Sears policy is something like if they don't have the exact model they will give you one with same features or upgraded. They wanted to give me homeowner type matte finish round-heads. I insisted that I liked the polished finish on my ratchets and they said the only way they could match that feature was to give me a set of the C-Man Pro ratchets off the shelf. So now I have a set and REALLY like them.

I would say you could probably do similar in any Sears store.

Maybe convince them that a comparable replacement would be the Cman thin profiles. That would be the only ratchet I would accept for replacement.

Those auctions reek of theft. Whether an employee stole them from Sears, or a salvage contractor decided to do things behind the books, this is low.

I'm all for sticking it to Sears, but this just isn't right.

Last summer there were several dealers at the flea who had huge lots of Craftsman tools. Some sold broken stuff but some used and in very good condition. Whole containers of identical hammers, screwdrivers, ratchets etc.
I wonder if this guy is one of them. They were there for several weeks then disappeared.
