I am making a tool box that fits into my workbench that will have several drawers to hold everything from taps and drill bits to screws and nails. The box and drawers are made of 3/4" melamine. I wanted the inside of the drawers to be 12" wide and 16" deep. With the inside being 16" deep that puts the outside at 17.5". My problem is what size drawer slides should I use, 16" or 18". With the 16" slide 3/4" will be will be somewhat hidden. The 18" slide will give me an extra 1/2" but slides will hang off of the drawer, not that it matters.

16" or 18"?

I'd use 18" full extension slides, As long as your cabinet can accommodate the extra length. FYI, there are sellers on ebay that have nice slides, no brand/generic, for way less than the going rate at cabinet parts places. I think mine cost less that 10 bucks each in 10 packs for 24".

Just checked some 16" slides I have and they measure out to 15.75". So, they are a bit shorter. The cabinet is 20" deep so no problem. Thanks for the help folks. Off to order some 18" slides.

Check Amazon too, I bought a box/case of 10 full extension 14" slides a while back for $40.00

oldmachinenut, how well have they held up? I got the set of 5 18" for $40.00 with free shipping. The name of company is called Friho. At first I was going to get the Accurides at $58.00 + $20.00 shipping. That is a very good price for Accurides. I also found some K&V at $68.00 including shipping. I choose the cheap route, hope it works out. It is just melamine.

They have held up very well, they are Promark brand, I have drawers that I made half way around my shop and all the drawers fairly well loaded and they are all still smooth. A friend gave me 3 cases of slides right after I bought these, they are Sterling brand and are identical to the ones from Amazon.

Very Cool! You can never have too many drawer slides.
