I've got a line on several 8 drawer flat files for free. No pics yet. I'm wondering if anyone has successfully used them as tool boxes.

I haven't but others have used them for tool and small parts cabinets.
Typically they are quite a bit deeper than the average large tool box.
I say go get them and post some pics.

If they're not ball-bearing slides then watch how much you load into them. We used several 3-drawer unit in the printshop I worked in. All wood construction, ~6" H x ~42" W x ~36" D, wood dado/runner slides. The tendency was to load them too much. They racked, they stuck, but they survived 40+ years.

I had some, they are too deep and take up too much space in my situation (20x23), plus the drawers are only about 2" deep. Gave mine to the neighbor.

What are the dimensions? Some work better than others. Depending on the space you have and their dimensions it may or may not be an efficient storage solution.

Did you grab these: http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/zip/4702465537.html

Flat File Drawers (p/u pending...) (Seattle)

UPDATE: Pick-up is pending.

Our design firm is clearing out some storage, and we are ready to say goodbye to these (3) flat file drawers. They have five drawers each, able to fit 30"x42" stock. They are heavy & bulky--you'll need a truck--and needs to be gone by Weds (10/8) night. Located in downtown Seattle, Pioneer Square. Contact us for more information--thanks!

...because if you did, that is some MAJOR SUCKAGE!!!

I have one built in to my lathe stand and the drawers open full, I can stand in them and they operate smoothly. First rule is never post about getting something BEFORE you get it though, tends to bite people in the ***. I hope you get them though, they are great in the shop/garage!

Well they're great for storing ratchets!

Have a few more for odd size/shaped tools, clamps, etc that don't play nicely with other tools in the roll cabs.

Mine aren't close to full extension though - I lose 8" left underneath the drawer above. Not much of a problem with large tools or shallow boxed/cased stuff, or with a sticky drawer liner (like under the ratchets), but a PITA if small roll-y stuff finds its way in...

Got a 3-stack of larger ones in the basement that extend farther out, but I've decided they take up too much real estate and will be hitting the road (whenever I get around to it...)

I had one for a while. It was ww2 vintage and heavy as a tank! Worked great for organizing small parts but I wold not want it for an everyday toolbox. Too easy to overload those drawers.

I ended up giving mine away When I moved.
