Dremmel - what to do with this thing?

my dad got me a dremmel 4000 set for christmas.

I honestly cant really see a good use for it.

Ive got a pneumatic die-grinder and cut-off wheel, a nice fixed-base router, and... for some REALLY small work, I can see it being useful, but this looks like something I might only use once or twice a year at best.

am I going to discover this is a miracle tool and use it alot, or???

I have a die grinder and a cut-off wheel myself, and every now and then, I have to bring out the dremmel to get somewhere tight to get the job done without making a massacre of the area. It's useful, believe me.

i use a dremel type tool for mainly inside the house type work.
cutting drywall, cleaning minor surface rust, ect.
when i building my guns it got used quite a bit

only time i used one at work was to make some cutouts in a plastic dash for heater ducts.
ive used it in the garage a couple times to cut screwdriver slots in damaged trim screws, or to cut the head off a small screw
as mentioned previously, getting into tight spots, sometimes it's the only thing that fits.

for me anyway, it's a seldom used tool, but when i do use it, it's either the only thing that will work, or it saves me a trip out to the garage.

I've used mine for gutting the interior of plastic power tool cases to fit more stuff, cutting receptacle openings in ceramic tile for a backsplash, and all kinds of other little stuff where a bigger / faster tool is overkill.

It's those few times you need it that make it so valuable. I use mine with a drum sanding attacment more than anything. The more you use it the more uses you find for them. i'd be lost without mine

Dremel Tool has a "chain saw sharpener" attachment and stones. I use it exclusively now, and it is a time saver and does a professional job.
I have even used it to grind off screws, nuts, etc., off ratchet wrenches, etc.
Glad I have 2 of them. Use them frequently.

AWESOME!

the booklet said you can use it for sharpening mower blades. that looks like something that would be near impossible to do better than a trusty bench grinder and piece of string to balance.

for the chainsaw though, I will look into that!
thanks!

+1 on the chainsaw sharpener. I also use mine with the drum sander to trim my dogs nails it's much safer for the dog than using clippers! I think you'll find a lot of differnt uses.

Hang on to it. You'll eventually use it - and then you'll find ways to use it!

And, by the way, keep an eye out for cutting wheels and sanding drums at estate sales, pawn shops, etc. You'll go through them fast, and Ace Hardware charges though the nose for those accessories.

I don't use it often but once in a while I use it to cut off something that other stuff won't reach. I bought an 1/8 collet mini air die grinder so that usually gets used for cut off duties when other stuff won't reach. It's also handy for chainsaw chains as others have mentioned. I've also found it to be useful with an 1/8" drill bit in it for cutting holes in car door panels for installing speakers.

Mine saved my *** just last week.

A friend pulled his wifes Pontiac into my shop for a VERY urgent heater core bypass job, as they needed the car the following day for holiday travel. The heater core decided to die that day.

I was under the car working with the heater core lines at the firewall, and was unable to get the factory spring clamps off of the hoses. They were bonded pretty good.

To make things worse, one of the heater core plastic hard lines that the hoses attached to had broken off right at the core, loose, but stuck in the firewall.

The Dremmel came to the rescue with a simple cut-off wheel. The spring clamps were cut off, and the hoses removed without a fuss.

And after soldering a bit of copper pipe and two ELs to make the bypass U, the heater core lines were plumbed together without modification, and the car was back on the road.

They made the trip without problems, and everyone had a happy holidays. Though, they did need a few extra blankets for the trip :)

Yes, but the dremel can sharpen the blade while it is still on the mower. I know you can't balance the blade correctly when its still attached, but to each their own.

FWIW, these sharpener attachments can be used to sharpen lots of stuff (axes, loppers, clippers, etc.)

Also, rotary tools work nicely for removing grout.

A dremel tool will work in places where finesse" is needed instead of brute force....once you figure this out......you'll never look back.

I use mine for sharpening my chainsaws and for fine work on my carvings.

I use diamond burs for the chainsaw sharpening. they last 100 times longer than the aluminum oxide stones and do not heat up the chain teeth.

I use mine often. Lately, I have been using a small wire wheel on the Dremmel to quickly buzz the rust off of threads before removing the nuts/bolts from the old Dodge I am restoring. Cuts down on the broken bolts and aggravation...
