Drill bit question

I have a set of drill bits that some one used at work, and then returned to me dull and the temper taken out by running hot. Can the over heated ends of the bits be cut off and resharpened?

Just resharpen like normal and use. Couple cycles should get rid of all the unhardened part plus then you get a few more uses out of them

Most likely you can recover these. I have done this especially with larger bits that are $$. If they are an inexpensive set of carbon steel ones then just replace the damaged bits. Most small bits are considered consumable.

HSS bits won't do that. So you must have had alloy steel bits. People don't realize this, but hardened alloy steel has a fairly low temper temperature. Your drill bits may have been tempered to 400F; easy to achieve.

When you overheat a tool, like when you grind a chisel, and the tool turns blue, the temper is lost up to .06" beyond the color. So, point is, those drill bits are probably toast. You'd have to grind off a lot of material to get back to good material. And that material may not even be hard from the factory.

This is why I never let anyone borrow drill bits when I was working in the dealership. People thought I was an *** but I have the same set of bits that I purchased in 1994 and only have replaced a few.
