Hey guys
I've got a (another:)) broken bolt to drill out, and need a longer drill bit to reach it (Kawi kx100 mini bike chain adjuster bolt).
Decided it would be nice to have a set of them, sooooo...
Recommendations on where to get a set of aircraft extension left hand TiN split point bits (6" would be ideal)? And do they make extension taps as well?:spit:

For something so specific I would go to McMaster Carr. Pricey but worth it if you know what you want, and know you can't get from the usual sources.

I know others will look and see that I've preached them in the past, and was condemned because they are "over priced". But it depends on what your time is worth. If I can have exactly what I need the next day without hunting around for x number of hours on eBay and Amazon, it's worth it to me. Some guys on here it seems have lots of "free time" as in it doesn't cost them anything to have a project hang for days/weeks.

Yes there is some specialized site that sells just what you need, it's made in the USA, and they ship same day, but do you have time to find it?

Also I know it's just the trade name for the size of bit, but if you add "aircraft" to anything seems the price spikes worse than adding "Harley Davidson".

You might get lucky if you buy a left handed drill bit. Be a good time to buy them as well.

Thanks guys!
"Here2Learn
There used to a be a product called Swingarm Buddy, I think was the name. I don't know if it will help you out or not."
I think just drilling/tapping will be the cleanest fix. Thanks!

I’ve bought quite a few things from McMaster Carr over the years. Back in January, for the first time, I got an email from them that says they sent a list of all the purchases I made last year to my state government. The information they sent to my state’s government included everything I bought including the quantity, the price I paid for the items, and the price I paid for shipping. I used to like McMaster Carr a lot.

Whoa, wait. What?

What state do you live in? Was this just something they did as a matter of policy for everyone in your state, or was there a subpoena or something?

In every state listed here, reporting and paying state taxes is up to the purchaser, not the seller:
https://www.mcmaster.com/#tax

They don't list my state (Indiana), but the law is the same here; it's my problem, not the seller's. And without a subpoena, the state tax goons aren't rummaging through anyone's financial records, ordering history, etc.

I live in Rhode Island. In Rhode Island it is also up to the purchaser to pay what we call use tax, which is really sales tax. Apparently, McMaster Carr is helping some state governments keep an eye on their population. I doubt I'll make another purchase from them unless I can't find what I need somewhere else.

My guess is, a purchaser from any of the states listed on that website will end up getting a similar email. But I'm just guessing.

But in this case it is just a term for long bits, like jobbers bits or Silver and Demming. It is more of a style term rather that a function, even if that is how they were initially used. I even just got a hit from Lowes for aircraft bits.

When drilling out a broken bolt a LH bit only helps if the bolt is loose. I find if the bolt is broken, that is often not the case. It is a lot easier to find a longer RH bit. I would just be drilling a hole for a screw extractor. Hopefully that will remove the screw and you won't need a tap. Been there, at work and at home, many times.

My theory on the left handed drill bit is that it will heat up the bolt and if it doesn't work I already have a hole drilled for the extractor. Downside I'm sure it would be expensive to buy a full set. I usually use my torch wrench first to heat the area around the bolt if it's stuck.

More so than a right-handed bit? How do you figure that?

I didn't mean heat up more than a regular bit. Just that with the added heat it might spin it out eventually. Sorry for the confusion. Most of the broken bolts I deal with only come out after several cuss words.

I have stopped using other screw extractors in favor of the ones from Grabit. It only needs a dimple of a hole to grab. The opposite end of the extractor is a very short LH drill bit that drills the hole. The body between the extractor and the bit is hex and is easily chucked in a reversable drill, which does the while job in reverse. The sets or individual bits appear to be sold under several brand names. It is amazing how well they grab. I have sometimes found it hard to get the extractor out of the extracted broken screw stub.
