Hey Guys I need some ideas on storing drill bits. I was trying to get a little organized yesterday and could not believe how many different types of bits I have accumulated over the years.

How do you guys organize/store your bits ?

I use Huot drill and tap dispensers for 1/2" and under. Morse taper drills to 3", S&D drills and large straight shank drills to 1-1/32" have wall racks.

I use the Huot for 1/2" and under as well but struggle with anything larger. Got a picture of the wall racks you use?

Have those Huot dispensing cabinets, but was thinking of using them for other stuff. Grabbed these pictures from another site, and am thinking of making up something like this with a mounted DP on top. That way all the drilling accessories could be corralled in one area.......... as well as all the hand drills.

Not handy. I'll take some pics the next time I have that area cleaned up.

Basically, I took 2x4's and ripped them on a 30 degree angle after cutting them to length and drilling holes in the 1-1/2" face. Then, I glued and screwed them together in a stack and painted the whole thing.

I use drill indexes for 1/2" and under, number and letter sets. For larger than 1/" i have a few plastic drawers I picked up at the dollar store which work great for so many things. I always make sure I have a few extras sitting around ready to be used when an idea comes up.

Those Huot indexes are nice, but I think a drawer system may be the way to go. There are not just a lot of bits, but there are so many different applications - steel, wood, hole, masonry, press ect. I'm having trouble figuring out how to organize them all.

I guess its not such a bad problem to have LOL.

I use one of those 60 drawer plastic drawer units for ~1/4" and smaller. The rest are in either metal indexes or layed out in a tool box with thin drawers.

I have a couple indexes that are full. One big one with fractions, letters and numbers. I have a couple of the smaller ones up to 1/4" and 1/2" that I carry around for different projects. Then I have a small drawer of various random sizes that I use when I just need to make a hole without an exact size. As they break or get lost from my index I'll replace them from the drawer. Once an index loses too many, they all go the drawer and I pick up another index.

Oh yeah, then I have another small drawer for the dull bits, waiting for the drill doctor.

Get a magnetic rail. That would be the best way for free access. I just buy kits so they have their own storage solution. But then there's a bunch of plastic boxes around.

Be sure to throw the robertson bits in your garbage can because you'll never use them. Actually, very good for some of those circle push retainers in some import cars without putting a gouge in it...or a roofing nail upside down.:willy_nil I hate having to buy replacements for all of those.
