Drill Bits

I have the snap on DB121C drill bit set that I use for most of my drilling needs, but they only go up to 3/8". If I can I'll use a unibit to go larger than that unfortunately that doesn't work all the time though. When drilling metal I always seem to have a problem with drill bits spinning in the chuck. I only have 3/8" drills so what I am looking for is a set of drill bits with a reduced shank over 3/8" and possibly has flat side on the shank as well to help with spinning. Does anyone know if there are drill bits like that sold? Thanks

By the looks of them they are all just a regular round shank. I am looking for a a drill bit set with a multiple sided shank that will allow for a better grip in the chuck

Instead of new drill bits, maybe you need a better quality chuck.

You are using a keyless chuck?

The norseman mechanics length bits have flats on the shank and the 29pc set goes up to 1/2". The standard jobber length bits from them don't have the flats so make sure you specify mechanics set.

Hi you need the drill bits with three flat sides I buy them from MSC or Enco. Just keep in mind the smaller size drill bits do not come with any flat sizes (under 11/64").
Keep them sharp a dull bit tends to slip more then a sharper bit and watch your speed.

If you want to go over 3/8" in steel you really need to step up to a 1/2" drill.

You are using a keyless chuck?

I use a keyless chuck on my cordless drill, but have a keyed chuck on my air drill. Both of them will slip and I just recently purchased the drill bits so they are sharp

Does this air drill happen to be from harbor freight?

nope. My cordless is a dewalt and the air drill is a cornwell cat250HD

You are using too many rpms most likely.
Free Speed 1800 RPM

Gotta slow down, more lube, more pressing.

I know that doesn't provide you with 3 flats drills, but it is going to help you in the mean time. Also, if your bits are marred up, need to clean them up.

Really, a better option for you is a better air drill. I had a lot of problems with 1800rpm drills and not being able to slow them enough.

Aircat 4450 is going to solve a lot of your problems. Free speed: 400rpms

Well I went with your advice and ordered the 4450 and a nice set of cobalt drill bits. Thanks for the advice.
