Ok guys, lets hear everyones opinion on what the drill bits are for the money. We've all used the cheapies at one point or another, but we eventually gotta step up. I'm assuming cobalt, since steel is about all I ever drill.

The best drills i ever used are Norsemen Magnum Super Premiums, they eat through everything and stay sharp the longest. I have a 115pc set of HSS china's that i use on softer things.

I have been told that Vermont American warranties their bits against breakage.

National Twist Drill, Chicago- Latrobe And Cleveland Twist Drill also make excellent drills

Elroy hates to bust your bubble but Vermont American cutting tools ****. Of course that is only Elroy's humble opinion.

When ever Elroy has a choice, I pick Union Butterfield or some other domestic brand like maybe Cleveland. It's really hard to choose now a days.

We had a high dollar job in the shop a few weeks ago and Elroy wanted a two flute 6-32 tap with a H-1 limit. Tried to make my best selection and ended up with a tap made in Brazil.

go figure

Your best performance is going to depend on having the proper geometry on the tool. In general, for hand use, Elroy prefers a cobalt steel over tools with the "coatings". The coatings only really pay off in high production application.

I throw precision twist into the mix. The 1/16 I use to drill for safety wire hole eats through bolts like a hot knife through butter.
