This is an adjustment that makes a big difference in getting a sharp bit.

The Model 750X enables
you to remove more or
less material from the tip
of your bit when you
sharpen. If your bit is
only slightly dull and you
simply wish to “touch
up” its point, turn the
Material Take-Off Knob
clockwise to reduce the amount of time it takes to sharpen
the bit. If your drill bit is quite dull or damaged, turn
the Material Take-Off Knob counter-clockwise to increase
the amount of material removed. Your MTO adjusts from 0
to .040 of an inch in increments of .005. Prior to aligning
the bit, turn the MTO Knob counter-clockwise until it
stops. (This is the maximum material that can be removed
in one sharpening.) Then turn it clockwise 3 marks on the
MTO knob. This is a good place to start for most bits.
Now turn the MTO knob either direction to adjust the
desired MTO. Each mark on the MTO knob is equal to
.005” change in material removed from the bit.
Note: After you have sharpened your bits on the Drill Doctor
at least one time, it is desirable to turn the MTO Knob
such that only a small amount of material is removed from
the bit each time you sharpen. This will significantly
decrease the time to sharpen as well as extend your bit
and wheel life. Once you’ve made your adjustment, align
and sharpen your bit as usual.

Another vote for the 750X!!!

Works great but I did have to learn the proper technique as was posted many times above. For me saving even one trip to the store because I broke or dulled a bit just paid for the machine.

I was drilling 3/8" thick SS steel and dulling the Cobalt bit very fast. Took about 6 sharpening's of the same bit to get the project finished. Very impressed with the results.

Can anyone post some tips for chucking up the smaller bits? I also don't get good results or at least inconsistent results on 1/4" and smaller bits.

This is not a big problem because they are cheap bits but again if I have to shut down the project and drive to the store for a bit I don't have in stock.

I have suggested to Drill Doctor to work on the smaller sizes if possible. I think they need a dedicated chuck for the smaller drill sizes to fix the problem.

I use the DD 250 for the little bits.---Sharpens 3/32'' up to 1/2'' but will not do the split point grind.---The DD 750 will only go down to 3/8'' bits.---I like having several sharp cobalt 1/8'' bits at my disposal for my pilot holes especially for stainless steel.---That way I can finish a project and resharpen the bits later.---When it gets down to 1/8'' bits or less it gets real dicey hand grinding them.---I can do the 1/8'' but I have trouble seeing the cutting edge on anything below that.

The only trouble with using the 250 is that it will turn a split point bit into a conventional grind and you loose that split point, no walking luxury.---They are still better than broken or chipped bits.

But as I said earlier, there is no substitute for being able to hand grind your own bits.---It's faster and you can make them cut rat tails if you know what you are doing.---I'm still working on the double grind split point by hand.---That takes a real steady hand and a keen eye.---Not sure if I'll ever get that down.
